Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe patient care within the peri-op unit.
  • Proper patient identification, time outs, resources, and supplies to maintain a safe environment.
  • Serve as a resource to teammates, support services, and physicians; working side by side with scrub to help maintain the sterile field in the operating room.
  • Ensure the sterile field is not compromised during the procedure.
  • Promote and support growth of others through precepting, mentoring, and orientation when appropriate.
  • Serve as a positive, clinical role model to facilitate staff development, providing pertinent feedback to manager or designee.
  • Keep the surgical area clean and organized for the scrub and the physician; remove instruments and sponges as they are used during the procedure.
  • Aid in the room turnover process and ensure the surgical room is sterile and safe for the patient.
  • Maintain the environment and supply inventory, including ensuring the procurement of necessary supplies, equipment, and expertise, and alerting administration of these needs in a timely manner.
  • Prepare the patient for the procedure and handle the preparation for the operating room, including educating the patient before surgery and participating in patient handoff during transitions.
  • Engage in helping to ensure that OR metrics, process improvement, work processes, providing solutions, and action plans to reach departmental metrics and goals.
  • Assess the patient's condition before a surgical procedure and work with a physician to develop the care plan for the patient during the surgery.
  • Assume other related responsibilities as required and assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Nursing from an accredited program is required. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Three years previous experience in acute OR setting, with at least 12 months as a Registered Nurse in the Orthopedic specialty area is preferred.
  • A current, valid RN license in state of practice or equivalent per state regulations.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.
