Unit Description
Peds Heart Center is a 29-bed unit ranked #4 nationally by U.S. News and World Report and #1 in patient outcomes. It is also an AACN Beacon Award-winning unit. Serving as the referral center for all major pediatric cardiac surgery in South Carolina, the unit averages 28 patients daily, with a mix of cardiac surgical and medical diagnoses. The Heart Center specializes in caring for patients with congenital and acute heart disease across various ages, including those requiring cardiac surgery, ventricular assist devices, heart transplants, cardiac catheterizations, and other medical conditions related to cardiac care. The unit also handles complex supportive therapies like ECMO/CRRT and pediatric palliative care as needed. Staffing includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and Unit Secretaries, with ancillary services such as Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, and Pediatric Pharmacists available as needed. All beds are continuously monitored.
Minimum Training and Education
- Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred
- RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013, must be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and complete a BSN degree within four years of hire or reclassification
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations
- Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, either from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
