About the Role

The Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit is designed and organized to meet the special needs of patients with acute neurosurgical and neurological illness and injuries. All neurological patients will be co-managed by a neuro-intensivist and a neurosurgery or neurology faculty. The age groups served include geriatric, adult, and adolescents fifteen years or greater.

Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level using the nursing process.
• Deliver safe and effective care in collaboration with other healthcare team members.
• Work in a Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit focused on acute neurosurgical and neurological patients.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013, with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing must enroll in an accredited BSN program within two years and obtain a BSN degree within four years of hire or reclassification date.
• A minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse.

Qualifications

• Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA-recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

• Ability to lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted (infrequent).
• Ability to lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. (infrequent).
• Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force (frequent). Examples include:
  • Transferring a 100 lb. non-assistive patient requires 50 lbs. of force (additional assistance needed for every 100 lbs. beyond this).
  • 20 lbs. of force to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet.
  • 25 lbs. of force to push a stretcher with a patient using one hand.
• Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one or both eyes (continuous).
• Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance, discriminate colors, determine depth perception, and maintain good peripheral vision (continuous).
• Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction (continuous).
• Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements (continuous).
• Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations (continuous).
• Ability to work rotating shifts (frequent) and overtime as required (frequent).
• Ability to work in a latex-safe environment (continuous).
• Ability to maintain tactile sensory functions (continuous).

Pay

Hourly pay grade: Health-28.

Schedule

• Hours per week: 36.
• Scheduled work hours/shift: 3 - 12-hour rotating shifts per week, including some weekends.
• Work shift: Rotating.
