About the role

The nerve block RN operates within the nursing scope of practice to provide high-quality care for a broad patient population. Duties include ensuring patients and their families understand the nerve block procedure and plan of care, assisting in procedure room preparation, participating in time-outs to verify correct block site, maintaining sterile technique, confirming medications drawn up by the anesthesiologist, administering conscious sedation and other drugs as needed, monitoring patient patterns and vital signs, and overseeing patient safety and comfort before, during, and after procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure patient and family understanding of nerve block procedure and plan of care
  • Assist in procedure room preparation
  • Participate in time-outs to verify correct block site
  • Maintain sterile technique
  • Confirm medications drawn up by the anesthesiologist are labeled
  • Administer conscious sedation and other drugs as needed
  • Monitor patient patterns and vital signs throughout the procedure
  • Oversight of patient safety and comfort before, during, and after procedures
  • Sedate patients at the direction of the anesthesiologist
  • Apply working knowledge and experience in high-volume procedural environments
  • Draw up and administer medications for both sedation and nerve block

Requirements

Minimum training and education: Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. One year of work experience as a registered nurse required. Required licenses, certifications, and registrations: Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required.

Qualifications

Physical and mental requirements: Ability to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs, work indoors, work outside in temperature extremes, work from elevated areas, work in confined/cramped spaces, perform job functions from kneeling positions, bend at the waist, twist at the waist, squat, perform pinching operations, perform gross motor activities with fingers and hands, perform firm grasping with fingers and hands, perform fine manipulation with fingers and hands, reach overhead, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, use lower extremities for balance and coordination, reach in all directions, lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted, lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs. of force, maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes, determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception, good peripheral vision capabilities, maintain hearing acuity, with correction, perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements, deal effectively with stressful situations, work rotating shifts, work overtime as required, work in a latex-safe environment, maintain tactile sensory functions, if selected, maintain good olfactory sensory function, if selected, be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.
