Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive psychiatric nursing assessments to determine mental status, risk level, clinical symptoms, withdrawal needs, and behavioral functioning.
  • Synthesizes psychiatric, medical, and psychosocial data to inform clinical decision-making and plan of care.
  • Maintains compliance with observation levels, including timely 15-minute checks and accurate documentation.
  • Evaluates medication effectiveness and monitors for side effects or adverse reactions, initiating appropriate follow-up.
  • Provides patient education regarding medications and treatment adherence.
  • Escalates changes in patient condition and collaborates with providers to adjust treatment plans.
  • Oversees patient safety through observation monitoring, rounding compliance, and milieu management.
  • Directs and participates in the safe application, monitoring, and documentation of restraint or seclusion interventions when clinically necessary, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Identifies and mitigates environmental risks and responds promptly to safety concerns or behavioral escalations.
  • Ensures adherence to hospital policies, CMS regulations, DNV standards, and state requirements.
  • Collaborates with psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, therapists, case management, and nursing leadership to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care.
  • Participates actively in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings and contributes to care planning and discharge planning.
  • Maintains therapeutic communication with patients, families, and care teams while upholding HIPAA and professional boundaries.
  • Demonstrates accountability for clinical practice, decision-making, and patient outcomes.
  • Participates in staff huddles, quality initiatives, and continuing education to support clinical excellence.
  • Serves as a role model for professionalism, teamwork, and adherence to standards of care.
  • Supports unit operations, including admissions, discharges, and patient flow.

Requirements

  • BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS)
  • REGISTERED NURSE (RN)
  • Associate's Degree
  • 2+ years related experience
  • Arizona state or compact state licensure as an RN
  • BLS (AHA)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • Experience in behavioral health, psychiatric, or acute inpatient setting
  • Crisis Prevention/Intervention (CPI) or equivalent certification
