Registered Nurse - Days - Full Time - Operating Room

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The hospital features the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services including women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. It operates a Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center, a Primary Stroke Center designated by the New York State Department of Health, and multiple outpatient sites such as a wound care center, hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

About the role

The Registered Nurse executes professional nursing care in accordance with physician treatment plans to ensure the comfort and well-being of patients and their families or support systems. Responsibilities include assessing patient needs, planning and implementing treatment plans, observing and evaluating patient progress, and documenting pertinent observations. The role involves collaborating with an interdisciplinary health team, directing nursing care delivery, and participating in the orientation of new employees.

Responsibilities

• Collects patient health data by involving the patient, family, and other health care providers.
• Performs initial and ongoing assessments based on patient presentation and department policy.
• Records relevant data on the nursing component of the Interdisciplinary Admission Assessment.
• Demonstrates awareness of special needs for diverse age groups, cultures, and patients with disabilities.
• Incorporates discharge planning into the admission process.
• Analyzes assessment data to determine problem identification and expected outcomes individualized to the patient.
• Develops and communicates a plan of care that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.
• Collaborates with the patient, family, and healthcare providers to integrate cultural, ethnic, and spiritual aspects into the plan of care.
• Implements the plan of care, performs patient monitoring, and adapts nursing procedures to meet individual patient needs.
• Provides education to the patient and family utilizing the educational assessment.
• Recognizes hazards to patient safety and takes action to maintain a safe environment.
• Assigns or delegates tasks according to the state nurse practice act and caregiver knowledge and skills.
• Demonstrates knowledge of drug administration, including incompatibilities, contraindications, and adverse effects.
• Evaluates patient progress toward attainment of outcomes and revises the plan of care as needed.
• Documents patient responses to interventions and updates the plan of care.
• Communicates with patients, families, and healthcare providers during the evaluation process.
• Provides care that demonstrates ethical beliefs and respect for patient rights.
• Participates in quality improvement activities to enhance nursing practice.
• Maintains effective interactions with staff and contributes to the professional development of peers.
• Seeks feedback and engages in performance appraisals to identify areas for professional growth.
• Works collaboratively with management to improve the environment of care.

Requirements

• Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice acquired through completion of a two-year training program at an accredited School of Nursing.
• Current New York State license as a Registered Professional Nurse.
• BLS certification (must be through AHA).
• De-escalation training.
• ACLS certification (required for ICU, Float Pool, Emergency Department).
• TCAR Certification (required for SICU, PACU).
• For Emergency Department: PALS and TNCC (within the first year).
• For Behavioral Health RNs: CPI and BERT training within the first 6 months.
• Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients and families, demonstrating cultural diversity awareness.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Analytical ability to assess and develop solutions for clinical situations or unit problems.
• Ability to maintain knowledge and proficiency in the clinical area and age group served.
• Physical ability to frequently lift/carry more than 75 lbs, push/pull more than 100 lbs, bend, squat, kneel, climb steps/ladder, and reach above shoulders.

Qualifications

• For ED RN: 1 year of Med Surg experience.
• For Med Surg Float Pool: 1 year of Med Surg experience.
• For Critical Care: 1 year of ICU/SDU experience.
• For ASU RN: 1 year of critical care experience preferred.
• BSN preferred.
• PALS preferred.
• Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia (e.g., CAPA) preferred.
• 1 year of nursing experience in preoperative, perioperative, or post-anesthesia care preferred.
• Experience in patient assessment, education, and care planning for pre- and post-operative patients preferred.
• Prior experience in discharge planning and coordination of perioperative patients preferred.
• Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems preferred.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $111,370.88 - $144,120.88 annually. Actual salaries depend on factors such as experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. This range does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits.

Schedule

Full-time position with a schedule of 6:30 AM - 4:30 PM.
