About the Role
This position serves as the Region Environmental & Prescribed Fire Manager, overseeing environmental compliance and prescribed fire operations in the Northern Region. The role involves managing complex projects, ensuring adherence to environmental regulations, and leading prescribed fire activities to reduce wildfire risks and enhance ecosystem health.
Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and oversee regional prescribed fire programs, including planning, environmental compliance, and execution.
- Coordinate with federal, state, local, and tribal partners to align prescribed fire and environmental management efforts.
- Ensure compliance with environmental laws, regulations, and policies (e.g., CEQA, NEPA, Clean Air Act, Endangered Species Act).
- Manage environmental review processes, including preparing and reviewing environmental documents and permits.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance on prescribed fire, smoke management, and fire ecology to internal and external stakeholders.
- Oversee budgeting, grant management, and resource allocation for prescribed fire and environmental programs.
- Lead and mentor staff, fostering professional development and collaboration across teams.
- Represent CAL FIRE in public forums, meetings, and interagency collaborations related to prescribed fire and environmental management.
Requirements
- Possession of a valid California Registered Professional Forester License (must provide a copy prior to hiring).
- Must complete the CAL FIRE Fighter Academy (FFA) and Company Officer Academy (COA) during the probationary period or provide proof of prior completion.
- Annual medical clearance, including a physical examination, vision, hearing, spirometry, and exercise treadmill test, to ensure fitness for wearing respiratory protection equipment (e.g., self-contained breathing apparatus).
- Valid California Driver’s License of the appropriate class (must provide a copy).
Pay
$9,897.00 - $12,843.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range, if applicable.
