Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic

About the Role

The Refrigeration / Air Conditioning Mechanic is responsible for the operation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, including reheat coils, thermostats, control valves, pneumatic valves, induction units, fan coil units, all direct expansion (DX) units, and refrigeration units.

Responsibilities

• Properly diagnose equipment for needed repairs and complete repairs expediently, utilizing good judgment when ordering parts.
• Make repairs in a neat and orderly fashion to minimize equipment downtime and departmental inconvenience.
• Perform repairs and/or adjustments to HVAC, DX, refrigeration equipment, and associated systems to improve efficiency and longevity.
• Inspect and operate refrigeration machinery, cooler, and freezer units to ensure proper functionality.
• Read thermometers and gauges, recording readings and regulating refrigerant and suction valves to maintain desired temperature.
• Test system efficiency using anemometers and thermometers, making necessary adjustments.
• Initiate purchase orders for parts and machinery and recommend repairs for mechanical devices.
• Install refrigeration machinery, air conditioning equipment, water coolers, and small refrigerators following regulatory and engineering standards.
• Install expansion and other valves according to blueprints and manufacturer specifications.
• Connect compressors to power sources and install independently operated water coolers and household refrigerators.
• Test large refrigeration systems, joints, and connections for leaks, repairing as needed.
• Operate systems for extended periods, adjusting thermostats and valves to ensure proper freezing action.
• Re-lamp light fixtures, replace ceiling tiles, and assist with ductwork, piping, and wiring identification.
• Maintain inventory of repair supplies (e.g., shower heads, light bulbs, air filters, toilet seals).
• Maintain tools, parts, and assigned work areas in clean and operational condition.
• Perform preventive maintenance work orders and keep detailed records of equipment history and service work.
• Participate in the Zone Discrepancy Program and assist with testing alarm systems (e.g., Fire Alarm System).
• Operate the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and demonstrate knowledge of Carrier Comfortworks and Trane Summit systems.
• Respond to codes and assist security as required.
• Read and sign the Read File weekly.
• Cross-train to fulfill boiler room shifts, including monitoring equipment for unusual noises, vibrations, or operational issues.
• Shift boiler room equipment, take readings, and maintain written records of operations.
• Familiarize with the operation and resetting of the Fire Alarm System.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient, personnel, and department information.
• Attend hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services.
• Demonstrate flexibility in work scheduling to ensure patient care.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (required).
• Coursework in mathematics, physics, shop, blueprint reading, or mechanical drawing (preferred).
• Completion of a 4+ year apprenticeship or equivalent on-the-job training.
• Refrigerant Recovery Certification (EPA Section 608 Certification).
