About the role
The Gift of Life Donor Program, a non-profit agency serving eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and Delaware, recovers organs and tissues used in lifesaving and life-enhancing transplants.
Responsibilities
- Rotates 48-hour and 72-hour call, responding to the referral of potential organ donors from hospitals within the GLDP service area.
- Evaluate potential organ donors in conjunction with AOC based on current and past medical and social history.
- Evaluate for donor designation, hemodilution, and ABO confirmation.
- Make medical management recommendations to the medical and nursing staff of potential organ donors to maintain adequate organ perfusion and oxygenation.
- Assess with the medical staff the care plan, neurological & hemodynamic status, and family communication plan.
- Drive in adverse weather conditions.
- Review all assessments with the AOC and request labs per Gift of Life and hospital protocol.
- Request appropriate medical interventions with the guidance of the AOC.
- Obtain appropriate blood specimens for serological and HLA testing and ME evaluation. Communicate with outside agencies to facilitate laboratory testing.
- Coordinate Operating Room recoveries.
- Occasionally speak with potential donor families and obtain authorization and medical/social history.
Requirements
- At least three years experience in a critical care/trauma, surgical or comparable clinical environment working in the capacity of Registered Nurse or six years as a Paramedic is required.
- Must live in the Metro Philadelphia area.
- Certification in ACLS or PALS or as an EMT-P required.
- Ability to evaluate and coordinate organ and tissue referrals.
- Capability to discuss donation options with family members and obtain consent.
- Possess a reliable vehicle that can handle adverse weather conditions.
Qualifications
- EMT-P certification or Diploma.
- Associate or bachelor's degree in nursing or a BS in a medically related field with a passion for saving or changing a life.
