About the role
Ryder is hiring a Refrigeration Diesel Technician in Sterling, Virginia. This is a full-time, regular position with a stable company for career growth, weekly pay, and excellent benefits.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose, overhaul, adjust, and repair a full range of trucks and trailers with a focus on refrigeration systems such as Thermo King and Carrier
- Perform standard and preventive maintenance
- Perform complex repairs with minimal support
- Access and use internal and external maintenance documents
- Diagnose and repair complex mechanical and electronic problems with minimal support, utilizing diagnostic computers/software when applicable
- Perform remote triage with RCRC and customers to determine best solutions for roadside breakdowns
- Perform facility maintenance duties
- Interact with customers/drivers to properly determine the nature of complaints once assigned a task
- Instruct and advise other technicians regarding maintenance repair procedures and diagnostics
- Coach/mentor other level technicians
- Advise shop management and other technicians on shop repairs
- Utilize key functions of the Shop Management System and electronic documentation
- Work in accordance with all federal/provincial and corporate compliance guidelines (i.e., safety, DOT, MOT)
- Perform other support duties as required to support operations, which may include Service Island support
- Complete OEM online diagnostic scan tool software courses as required by location fleet mix within 365 days
- Complete instructor-led OEM courses as required to support location fleet mix
- Become SBTIII trained within 180 days (SBT220)
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Vocational or technical certification preferred
- Post-secondary degree or technical certifications preferred
- Basic tools required
- Demonstrated aptitude and applied experience in mechanical repair of automotive gas or diesel engines, including:
- Routine preventative maintenance (e.g., oil changes, brake and tire work)
- Diagnostics and repairs, including AC and electrical systems
- Advanced skilled level repairs, including major engine repairs, diesel aftertreatment, or automotive fuel injection repairs
- Four (4) years or more of relevant work experience preferred
- Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A preferred
- All other certifications as required by location
- Ability to perform all T3 tasks
- Demonstrated advanced analytical and repair skills in vehicle maintenance
- Effective interpersonal communication skills
- Basic computer skills: PC, Windows, mouse, etc.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Availability to work shift work/weekends and on-call duty as required
- ASE Certification in PM, Brakes, A/C, Electrical, Electronics, or ASE Master Mechanic preferred
- Required to operate shop computers and diagnostic test equipment proficiently
- Must have minimum tool requirement
- Must be able to road test vehicles as necessary
- Demonstrated ability to coach/mentor/influence others
- Must be able to obtain CDL within 6 months after hire
- Must pass a Ryder Drug Test, DOT physical, Ryder road test, and Ryder background and motor vehicle check including drug and alcohol verification from previous employers for the last 3 years

Pay
$42.00 per hour
Schedule
- Monday–Friday
- Weekends off
- First shift: 7:00 am – 3:30 pm
Additional incentives
- Certification Bonus: $100 for each new ASE Certification obtained, up to $700
- Reefer Experience Quarterly Bonus: Up to $500 every quarter (four times per year)
- Sign-on Bonus: $2,500 at 30 days and $2,500 at 90 days
