About the role
The Recreational Therapist at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital is responsible for planning and implementing a medically prescribed recreational therapy program tailored to each patient's diagnosis, acuity, level of function, and cognitive status. This role involves performing in-depth evaluations using various assessment tools to identify patients' cognitive, social, emotional, and motor function for leisure/recreation participation. Treatment programs are primarily delivered through leisure education, adaptive leisure equipment, and activity analysis.
Responsibilities
- Develops and implements therapeutic recreation programs for patients in the inpatient rehab unit.
- Evaluates patients' cognitive, social, emotional, and motor function to tailor leisure activities.
- Utilizes assessment tools to determine appropriate leisure/recreation activities for patients.
- Trains patients and families in adaptive leisure techniques and equipment.
- Analyzes leisure activities to enhance patient engagement and recovery outcomes.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field.
- Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
- BLS certification within 90 days of employment.
Qualifications
- One year of relevant experience preferred.
- Experience working with individuals with physical, cognitive, or emotional disabilities.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Skills
- Knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles and practices.
- Proficiency in assessing and evaluating patient needs.
- Ability to adapt recreational activities to meet individual patient needs.

Pay
$30.00 - $35.00 per hour, depending on experience.
Schedule
Part-time, 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 1 - 5 pm.
