Recreation Specialist (GEI)

About the role

These positions are located in the Mid-Atlantic Region, Fleet and Family Readiness Program, Fleet Readiness Department in the Fitness/Sports and Deployed Support Department at MWR JEBLC-Rockwell Hall Gym in Virginia Beach, VA. The purpose of this position is to serve as a Group Exercise Instructor demonstrating and leading safe and effective group exercise classes, applying the fundamental principles of exercise science, under the supervision of the assigned manager.

Responsibilities

• Conduct one or more group exercise classes including lectures, exercise instruction and various athletic endeavors.
• Promote good patron relationships and enhance the image of the respective program.
• Review the schedule of functions for the assigned shift to determine special preparations required.
• Ensure necessary space, supplies and equipment are available and room arrangements are completed prior to class start.
• Provide instruction and guidance to all patrons.
• Exercise supervision over all operations of the class/activity.

Requirements

• Must pass all applicable records and background checks.
• Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check; any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
• Must possess and maintain a current driver’s license.
• Position is subject to an irregular tour of duty which may include weekends and holidays.
• Starting May 7, 2025, non-affiliated individuals requesting access will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to access CNRMA installations.

Qualifications

• Must possess and maintain at all times a Certified Group Exercise Instructor/Trainer Certificate from one of the following organizations:
  • American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
  • Cooper Institute
  • American Council on Exercise (ACE)
  • Aerobic and Fitness Association of America (AFAA)
  • American Aerobic Association International/International Sports Medicine Association (AAAI/ISMA)
  • National Dance Exercise Instructor Training Association (NDEITA)
  • International Dance and Exercise (IDEA)
  • Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA)
• Must possess and maintain at all times a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Instructor certificate and First Aid Instructor certificate.
• Position has been designated Non-Critical sensitive; employment is conditional on the successful completion of an Access National Agency Check (ANACI).
• Must be a mature individual with prior leader/supervisory experience.
• Must possess an adequate level of physical fitness to use and demonstrate all exercises and be able to lead all classes.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and interview skills are required to assess patron needs and assist with the promotion and marketing of the program.
• Considerable tact and diplomacy as well as finesse are required when interacting with participants.
• Basic knowledge of marketing/publicity materials and the use of basic computer hardware and software is preferred.

This position does not have a positive education requirement.
