Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) is hiring for part-time, year-round positions in the Recreation Division as Recreation Associates (Event Hosts).

About the role

Portland Parks & Recreation is seeking Event Hosts (ages 18+) for the 2026-2027 Goldenball Youth Basketball season. Event Hosts monitor basketball games at various locations throughout the city, creating a welcoming atmosphere, engaging with park and facility guests, and providing excellent customer service. Responsibilities include maintaining clean facilities, monitoring space usage, addressing safety concerns, upholding the PP&R code of conduct, and completing necessary paperwork.

Sports League Staff are responsible for providing a safe game environment and leading in a professional manner. Applicants must demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and enthusiasm while serving as positive role models.

The season runs from January 9, 2027, to mid-March 2027. Mandatory training includes one Saturday meeting in November and one on-site court training in December, covering game-day expectations, set-up, league guidelines, and equipment handling.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor basketball (Goldenball) and volleyball games at various city locations.
  • Create a welcoming atmosphere and engage with park and facility guests.
  • Provide excellent customer service and serve as a resource for PP&R information.
  • Maintain clean facilities and park spaces.
  • Monitor space usage and guest needs, proactively addressing safety concerns.
  • Uphold the PP&R code of conduct and communicate with supervisors, rangers, and security.
  • Complete paperwork and record-keeping, including monitoring participation.
  • Set up and take down event spaces, including moving equipment.
  • Set up game clocks, greet teams and spectators, sign in coaches and referees, and read the Spectator Pledge.
  • Work independently to address potential safety concerns.
  • For Lead Attendants: Provide direction and support to Event Hosts, restock supplies, manage breaks, and handle customer service or game-time situations.

Requirements

  • Ability to promote a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.
  • General knowledge of the assigned recreation area.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to respond to customer concerns.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and active participation.
  • Basic knowledge of the in-season sport and relevant equipment.
  • For Lead Attendants: Familiarity with game site set-up and readiness procedures, ability to train or fill in for Event Hosts, and ability to travel between assigned sites.

Pay

  • Training pay: $20.59/hour for all Recreation Associate positions.
  • Attendant base pay: $20.59 - $24.03/hour (entry rate: $20.59).
  • Lead Attendant base pay: $22.59 - $26.03/hour (entry rate: $22.59).
  • Leadership premium: $2.00/hour for Lead Attendants while directing or coaching other staff.
  • Language pay: Additional compensation for using non-English language skills to assist the community.

Schedule

  • Part-time, casual positions with flexible hours.
  • Shifts may include days, evenings, weekends, or holidays.
  • Hours vary weekly based on program needs; no guaranteed hours per week.
  • Primary shift for Event Hosts and Lead Attendants: Saturdays, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM.
