About the role

The Duke Recreation and Physical Education department is seeking individuals to join the Wilson Recreation Center and Brodie Recreation Center teams as Guest Services Attendants, Facility Monitors, and Weight Room Attendants. Positions are available for part-time work ranging from 10-19.9 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Guest Services Attendant:

    • Verify member ID and membership status.
    • Deny or approve access based on membership validation.
    • Assist guests and visitors with entry procedures and enforce guest policies.
    • Provide outstanding customer service.
    • Log and manage lost and found items.
    • Maintain accurate records for guest/visitor logs and incident/accident reports.
    • Absorb key management, facility reservations, and coordination with other staff.
  • Facility Monitor:

    • Perform regular walkthroughs of all recreation buildings.
    • Serve as the first responder during emergencies.
    • Enforce access control and ensure all doors and emergency exits are properly secured.
    • Maintain cleanliness in locker rooms, restrooms, and general facility areas.
    • Inspect, clean, and report issues with cardio and fitness equipment.
    • Enforce user conduct policies and appropriate athletic attire standards.
    • Support front desk and weight room staff during peak hours.
    • Manage lost and found items according to facility procedures.

  • Weight Room Attendant:

    • Maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment within the weight room.
    • Enforce facility policies, assist members with equipment use, monitor safety, maintain cleanliness, and respond to emergencies.
    • Collaborate with facility monitors and guest services for break coverage and safety concerns.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Must be able to use a computer.
  • At least 1 full year customer service experience or working with the public.
  • Certification in First-Aid, CPR/AED or willingness to obtain within 60 days.
  • Ability to attend and participate in off-hour training sessions.
  • Ability to interact with diverse groups through a variety of situations.
  • Ability to use independent judgment when needed.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to accommodate a variable work schedule that may include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 2 shifts per week.

Skills

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow protocols.
  • Comfortable using computer systems and mobile apps.
  • Ability to remain professional and calm in emergencies.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 45 lbs. (moving equipment, items, etc.).
  • Basic familiarity with fitness equipment.

Duke University offers an annual base salary range for this position as USD $18.00.
