About the role

The incumbent is responsible for supporting CN’s business, people, and reputation by proactively changing attitudes and behaviors toward rail safety through enforcement, educational, engineering, and engagement initiatives designed to reduce train-related incidents and save lives. The role involves providing training to internal employees, local police, and community members.

Responsibilities

  • Operations
    • Conduct proactive, targeted safety and security enforcement.
    • Respond to and answer calls for service.
    • Provide emergency response to railroad-related incidents.
    • Conduct investigations as directed by CN Police leadership to protect CN’s people, freight, and railway property.
  • Education and Awareness
    • Deliver rail safety training.
    • Facilitate information sessions for local law enforcement personnel and community members.
    • Deliver rail safety presentations tailored to a variety of audiences.
  • Stewardship of Territory (Community-Oriented Policing)
    • Ensure the safety and security of the designated territory by establishing priorities and identifying areas requiring safety improvements or repairs.
    • Proactively engage with diverse community stakeholders to identify and address actions needed to reduce incidents and save lives.
    • Identify and mitigate security risks affecting CN.
    • Identify areas requiring maintenance, repairs, traffic safety management, and trespassing prevention.
    • Collaborate with city officials and the Engineering department to determine risk-reduction strategies.
  • Partnerships
    • Build professional relationships with key stakeholders across federal, state, provincial, and local law enforcement authorities.
    • Develop collaborative relationships with CN employees to protect CN’s people, business, and reputation.
  • Working Conditions
    • Work in a combination of office environments and outdoors in various weather and environmental conditions.
    • Workweek includes weekdays, weekends, and some statutory holidays based on service needs.
    • Available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidents.
    • Manage priorities and deliver work within established timelines with team support.
    • Frequent travel required (80–90% of time in the field, 10–20% in the office).

Requirements

  • Experience
    • Minimum 5 years of experience in law enforcement.
    • Experience working with local, state, and federal agencies in emergency response situations.
    • Experience in investigation (asset).
    • Experience in supervision (asset).
    • Candidates with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
  • Education/Certification/Designation
    • General Education Degree (GED) or Diploma.
    • Specialized training related to policing.
    • Commissioned and certified police officer within designated state.
    • Valid Driver’s License.
    • Candidates with equivalent practical experience, education, or training will be considered.
  • Technical Skills/Knowledge
    • Knowledge of State and Federal Criminal and Civil Laws, Department of Transportation (DOT), and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations (asset).
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
    • Investigative expertise.
    • Knowledge of railroad operations (asset).
