Railcar Mechanic
About the role
The Railcar Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, repairing, rebuilding, and maintaining railcars to ensure safe and efficient rail operations. This role performs mechanical repairs, welding, fabrication, and component replacement while adhering to industry, customer, and company safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Repair, modify, rebuild, and upgrade railcars and railcar components
- Perform welding, cutting, grinding, and fabrication work using welding and torch equipment
- Conduct mechanical repairs and maintenance using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments
- Inspect railcars, machines, and equipment to identify damage, wear, or mechanical issues
- Operate forklifts and lifting equipment to move, align, and position components safely
- Measure, cut, thread, and replace pipes and air lines as needed
- Assemble subassemblies, major components, and mechanical systems while testing for proper operation
- Repair broken or damaged parts using welding and mechanical repair techniques
- Enter repair and maintenance information into electronic tracking systems
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment
- Support operational goals by completing repairs according to customer and industry standards (AAR, FRA, etc.)
- Follow all company safety procedures and always maintain safe work practices
- Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership
Requirements
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience/ability
- 2 years experience with welding, cutting, and fabrication processes
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and repair procedures
- Experience using hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and precision measuring instruments
- Forklift experience preferred
- Ability to work independently and make sound repair decisions
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
- Ability to meet production and repair time standards
- Basic computer skills for electronic repair documentation
- Ability to work in changing outdoor environments and industrial conditions
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
