About the Role

The Radiology Student Tech performs technical procedures applying ionizing radiation to demonstrate structures for interpretation or therapeutic intervention by a licensed practitioner. Responsibilities include preparing and operating equipment, developing and organizing films, and preparing patient rooms, supplies, and medications (contrast agents).

  • Radiology Student Tech I: Transports and monitors patients. May perform x-rays (abdomen, upper, and lower extremities) under supervision, provided clinical competencies are completed as required by the radiology program.
  • Radiology Student Tech II: Performs x-rays unsupervised (including fluoroscopy and surgery), provided required clinical competencies for their designated radiology program are completed.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare equipment for x-ray procedures and expose x-ray film.
  • Develop and organize films for interpretation.
  • Prepare patient rooms, supplies, and contrast agents.
  • Transport and monitor patients as necessary (Tech I).
  • Perform x-rays under supervision (Tech I) or unsupervised (Tech II), including fluoroscopy and surgery (Tech II).

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must be enrolled in a CAHEA (Committee of Allied Health Education and Accreditation)-accredited radiology program or equivalent.
  • Radiology Student Tech II must have completed 12 months of the CAHEA radiological technologist program.
  • Must complete and maintain BCLS certification upon hire and/or transfer.
  • Previous clinical rotation experience required.

Skills

  • Superior communication (verbal and written) and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in computer use, including MS Outlook and Word, and office technology (telephone, fax, etc.).
  • Ability to apply appropriate clinical judgment across all patient age groups.
  • Strong assessment and decision-making abilities.
  • Emotional stability to handle high-stress levels and meet deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task in complex situations.
  • Collaborative and professional working relationships.

Physical Demands

  • Moderately active work involving frequent movement within the office and facility, including travel to other SRHS locations.
  • Frequent exertion of negligible force to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects, including patients.
  • Repetitive motions, such as wrist, hand, or finger movements while operating office equipment (e.g., keyboard).
  • Exposure to body fluids, sputum, and tissues, with potential infectious disease hazards.
  • Ability to perceive sound at normal speaking levels and make fine auditory discriminations.
  • Close visual acuity to shift focus between computer monitors and printed materials.
  • Ability to remain active for extended periods without undue fatigue.
  • Flexibility to work assigned schedules, including off days, shifts, or weekends as needed by the hospital.

Schedule

Every other Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM.

Location

Singing River Gulfport Hospital.
