Responsibilities

This class of positions encompasses responsible clinical and administrative work of varying degrees of difficulty and responsibility involving day-to-day tasks of an operating segment of the Radiology department in the delivery of radiological services.

  • Operates x-ray equipment, develops images, and prepares radiological areas, equipment, supplies, and contrast materials.
  • Performs responsible supervisory, administrative, and clinical activities involving day-to-day supervision of an operating segment of the Radiology department in the delivery of radiological services, or performs specialized imaging procedures with diagnostic and interventional radiography.

Assignment Level I

  • Prepares radiological area, equipment, contrast materials, and supplies as needed for patients.
  • Prepares patient for x-ray, explains procedures, transfers patient to table, positions patient, and assists patient at the end of procedures.
  • Follows prescribed techniques to administer general and specific x-rays.
  • Adjusts equipment, determines proper voltage, current, and desired exposure time, arranges immobilization and support devices to obtain patient position, adjusts lead shield, and selects proper imaging techniques.
  • Develops images in accordance with photographic techniques.
  • Observes patient and machine during procedure and reports unusual occurrences; records patient’s condition.
  • Maintains supplies, equipment, and required records.
  • Transports and uses mobile x-ray equipment in patient care areas as required.
  • Follows all proper radiation, patient, and employee safety protocols; adheres to all appropriate radiation prevention, containment, and control measures.
  • Effectively uses electronic medical records (EMR) to document patient encounters and access pertinent patient data and imaging results.

Assignment Level II

  • Performs procedures on patients whose conditions require specialized expertise.
  • Assists Radiologists, other physicians, and allied health care professionals in performing diagnostic or treatment procedures.
  • Performs diagnostic testing on equipment and general maintenance.
  • Monitors patient and equipment condition during procedure and reports changes to appropriate health care professional.
  • Assists and guides radiographers in the performance of a wide variety of x-ray procedures.
  • Trains and assists radiographers in a wide variety of x-ray procedures.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates the day-to-day activities of the area to ensure continuous flow of work.
  • Supervises radiographers and ancillary personnel assigned to the area.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment to ensure operational viability of the area.

Assignment Level III

  • Supervises the delivery of radiological services, in accordance with established standards and procedures, for the service area or unit.
  • Recommends changes and improvements relating to the delivery of radiological services.
  • Participates in the development of training programs for radiographic personnel, ancillary personnel, and allied health care professionals.
  • Demonstrates new or revised techniques, procedures, and equipment.
  • May perform radiologic procedures, as required.
  • Performs special procedures including diagnostic and interventional radiography (e.g., C.T., M.R.I., and Mammography).
  • Recommends area assignment of personnel to coordinate activities within the department with other activities and services and represents the department in interdepartmental operations and meetings.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities, including coordination, control, and maintenance of technical equipment.
  • Participates in and coordinates procurement and storage of supplies and makes recommendations regarding supply and equipment needs.
  • Performs research and participates in special projects involving evaluation of equipment and delivery of service.
  • May be assigned duties and responsibilities of immediate Supervisor in their absence on a temporary basis.

Requirements

Assignment Level III:

For Supervisory Assignments:

  • A valid license and current registration to practice Diagnostic Radiography as a Radiologic Technologist issued by the NYSDOH.
  • Two (2) years of Radiologic Technologist experience performing duties consistent with Assignment Levels I and II, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

For Specialized Imaging Assignments:

  • A valid license and current registration to practice Diagnostic Radiography as a Radiologic Technologist issued by the NYSDOH.
  • Possession of a current advanced-level certification for the performance of these procedures.

Qualifications

  • Preferred Advanced certification by the ARRT in Computed Tomography.
  • Two or more years of full-time experience as a CT Technologist working independently.
