Elmhurst Hospital Center (EHC) is the major tertiary care provider in the borough of Queens. The hospital is comprised of 545 beds and is a Level I Trauma Center, an Emergency Heart Care Station and a 911 Receiving Hospital. It is the premiere health care organization for key areas such as Surgery, Cardiology, Women's Health, Pediatrics, Rehabilitation Medicine, Renal and Mental Health Services.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Purpose of Position:
- This class of positions encompasses responsible clinical and administrative work of varying degrees of difficulty and responsibility involving day-to-day tasks of an operating segment of the Radiology department in the delivery of radiological services.
- Operates x-ray equipment, develops images, and prepares radiological areas, equipment, supplies and contrast materials.
- All personnel perform related work.
- Performs responsible supervisory, administrative and clinical activities involving day-to-day supervision of an operating segment of the Radiology department in the delivery of radiological services, or performs specialized imaging procedures with diagnostic and interventional radiography.
- There are two (2) types of assignments in this Level of positions.
Specialized Imaging Assignments
- For Specialized Imaging Assignments, performs typical tasks of Assignment Levels I and II, as listed below, for special procedures with diagnostic and interventional radiography in Computerized Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging or Mammography; and performs additional related Assignment Level III tasks described below, as applicable to this type of assignment.
Supervisory Assignments
- In addition to performing duties of lower Assignment Levels at a more difficult and responsible level, performs the duties described below for Assignment Level III.
Examples of Typical Tasks
- Assignment Level I:
- Prepares radiological area, equipment, contrast materials and supplies, as needed for patients.
- Prepares patient for x-ray, explains procedures, transfers patient to table, positions patient and assists patient at end of procedures.
- Follows prescribed techniques to administer general and specific x-rays. Adjusts equipment, determines proper voltage, current and desired exposure time, arranges immobilization and support devices to obtain position of patient, adjusts lead shield, and selects proper imaging techniques.
- Develops images in accordance with photographic techniques.
- Observes patient and machine during procedure and reports unusual occurrences and records patient’s condition.
- Maintains supplies, equipment and required records.
- Transports and uses mobile x-ray equipment in patient care area as required.
- Follows all proper radiation, patient, and employee safety protocols; adheres to all appropriate radiation prevention, containment, and control measures.
- Effectively uses electronic medical records (EMR) to document patient encounters and access pertinent patient data and imaging results.
- Assignment Level II:
- Performs procedures on patients whose conditions require specialized expertise.
- Performs diagnostic testing on equipment and general maintenance.
- Monitors patient and equipment condition during procedure and reports changes to appropriate health care professional.
- Assists and guides radiographers in the performance of a wide variety of x-ray procedures.
- Trains and assists radiographers in a wide variety of x-ray procedures.
- Plans, schedules and coordinates the day-to-day activities of the area to ensure continuous flow of work.
- Supervises radiographers and ancillary personnel assigned to the area.
- Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment to ensure operational viability of the area.
- Assignment Level III:
- Supervises the delivery of radiological services, in accordance with established standards and procedures, for the service area or unit.
- Recommends changes and improvements relating to the delivery of radiological services.
- Participates in the development of training programs for radiographic personnel, ancillary personnel and allied health care professionals. Demonstrates new or revised techniques, procedures and equipment.
- May perform radiologic procedures, as required.
- Performs special procedures including diagnostic and interventional radiography (e.g., C.T., M.R.I., and Mammography).
- Recommends area assignment of personnel to coordinate activities within the department with other activities and services and represents the department in interdepartmental operations and meetings.
- Participates in quality assurance activities, including coordination, control and maintenance of technical equipment.
- Participates in and coordinates procurement and storage of supplies and makes recommendations regarding supply and equipment needs.
- Performs research and participates in special projects involving evaluation of equipment and delivery of service.
- May be assigned duties and responsibilities of immediate Supervisor in their absence on a temporary basis.
Minimum Qualifications
- Assignment Level III:
- For Supervisory Assignments: a valid license and current registration to practice Diagnostic Radiography as a Radiologic Technologist issued by the NYSDOH; and two (2) years of Radiologic Technologist experience performing duties consistent with Assignment Levels I and II, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
- For Specialized Imaging Assignments: a valid license and current registration to practice Diagnostic Radiography as a Radiologic Technologist issued by the NYSDOH; and possession of a current advanced- level certification for the performance of these procedures.
Additional Salary Compensation
All Radiologic Technologists in Assignment Levels II and III shall receive a differential of $7,500 per annum to be cross-trained on different modalities of radiologic imaging and to be cross-assigned (once trained) to different imaging settings depending on patient volume and staffing needs within a facility.
