About the role

The Radiation Therapist II is an experienced radiation therapist who provides accurate radiation treatment to patients as prescribed by the radiation oncologist while developing a positive, trusting, caring, and professional relationship with patients and coworkers. This role administers therapeutic radiation to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients under the supervision of the radiation oncology team, including Lead Therapist, Supervisor/Manager/Director of Radiation Oncology, Medical Physics, and the Radiation Oncologist.

Increased responsibilities include acting as primary therapist, independently completing or leading more complex tasks, sharing insights, and training new or less experienced Radiation Therapists. This role enhances departmental operations through consistently respectful and positive communication with coworkers, patients, patients’ family members, and visitors.

Responsibilities

• Review prescription, diagnosis, patient chart, and patient identification for accuracy prior to every treatment.
• Work with the radiation oncology team to identify, prepare, and construct equipment such as immobilization devices, treatment tools, and protection devices to achieve repeatable patient positioning per the radiation treatment plans.
• Act as a double check for safety and quality when working as a team with another therapist.
• Position patients for treatment with accuracy according to the radiation oncologist's prescription, utilizing treatment devices when prescribed.
• Administer prescribed doses of radiation defined in the patient's treatment plan to the specified target area using radiation therapy equipment according to established practices and standards.
• Perform all safety and quality checks on radiation therapy equipment to ensure proper operation and communicate any issues to radiation oncology leaders and operating engineers.
• Educate, prepare, and reassure patients and their families by answering questions, providing physical assistance, and reinforcing physician's advice regarding treatment reactions and post-treatment care.
• Enter accurate patient data into equipment computer and set controls to operate and adjust radiation therapy delivery equipment and regulate dosage.
• Observe and reassure patients during and after treatment, reporting any unusual reactions or concerns about changes in patient status to the physician.
• Follow principles of radiation protection for patient, self, and others.
• Analyze problems when patient setups are not reproducing and take appropriate corrective action.
• Troubleshoot problems with equipment, patient medical conditions, and patient satisfaction situations, escalating concerns that cannot be immediately corrected.
• Maintain treatment schedules, notify patients of treatment times, and inform them of any scheduling delays or changes.
• Maintain accurate and timely records per department/practice guidelines, including radiation dosages, elapsed days, equipment settings, appropriate charge capture, and patients' reactions.
• Work within scope independently, utilizing self-direction to prioritize workload and carry out tasks with flexibility for volume variances.
• Follow procedures to respond quickly and without immediate assistance in an emergency.
• Communicate effectively in writing and speaking to convey information professionally and accurately.
• Participate in maintaining neat, clean, and stocked treatment rooms and console area.
• Work toward achieving department goals and objectives and participate in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
• Train and supervise Radiation Therapy students or newly hired radiation therapists.
• Participate in radiation-specific educational opportunities and training sessions to further professional growth and skills.
• Review simulation and treatment charges for accuracy and completion.
• Act as treatment room lead for SBRT Delivery and pediatric sedation treatment delivery.
• Safely administer IV contrast for CT Simulations.
• Collaborate with medical physics and equipment/proton engineers to complete daily machine QA.
• Complete patient-specific QA as requested by Medical Physics.
• Follow policies, procedures, and safety standards.
• Complete required education assignments annually.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a Certified Radiation Therapist.
• Demonstrated ability to complete tasks, meeting the required skills to promote into the Radiation Therapist II position.

Qualifications

• Maintain ARRT (T) certification.
• CPR certification required.
