QCW HVACR Multiple Positions/Various Work Schedules (4 Positions)

UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has four current job openings for Qualified Craft Worker – HVACR positions at the Storrs Campus and Law School/Downtown Hartford Campuses. These are permanent, full-time, 37.5 hour per week positions with a non-negotiable hourly salary of $33.47/hour.

Schedule

The following work schedules and locations are currently recruiting:

  • 1st Shift HVACR Shop: Tuesday – Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • 1st Shift HVACR Shop: Sunday – Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • 3rd Shift HVACR Shop: Tuesday - Saturday, 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
  • 3rd Shift HVACR Shop: Sunday – Thursday, 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

1st and 3rd shift positions are eligible for shift differential. Weekend differential is applied to hours worked on Saturday or Sunday if the entire 7.5-hour shift is worked. These positions are categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Employees must be willing and able to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or significant events affecting campus operations, respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends, or holidays), and participate in the Weekly On-Call Rotation Schedule. When assigned to on-call rotation, the assigned cell phone must be carried, and calls must be responded to within 15 minutes.

Facilities Operations NP-2 employees may also be required to perform job duties at any of the Regional Campuses.

Pay

Annual salary range: $65,516.00 - $84,235.00. Individuals new to state service start at the minimum of the pay plan.

Responsibilities

  • Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard HVACR trade practices and codes on air systems used in heating, ventilating, and refrigeration.
  • Operates, maintains, repairs, installs, modifies, and assembles air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems using Freon or chilled water for cooling and air or water for condenser means.
  • Determines required cooling capacity of units for small areas; uses and interprets psychometric charts.
  • Controls and measures air flow, room air changes, and room pressurizing; monitors computerized control systems.
  • Performs minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks; adds water treatment chemicals to boilers.
  • Makes estimates of time, personnel, and materials for assigned tasks; keeps necessary records.
  • May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required; may install, modify, repair, and assemble electrical or pneumatic controls for HVACR equipment.
  • May inspect and repair steam traps fed by main systems; may remove pipe insulation materials using OSHA-approved methods.
  • May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts; may operate heavy equipment.
  • May respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state-owned airports.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration trade.
  • Two (2) years of the above experience must have been performing skilled HVACR trades.
  • Current Connecticut Heating, Piping, or Cooling license, which must be retained throughout employment.
  • Current motor vehicle operator license.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints for building and utility systems.
  • Must be willing to work during emergency closures, respond to emergencies on overtime, and participate in the Weekly On-Call Rotation Schedule.

Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods, and practices in the HVACR trade.
  • Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records; some ability to utilize computer software.
  • Adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual/auditory acuity to perform duties.
  • Must be able to lift moderate to heavy weights and use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
  • May be exposed to risks from equipment, extreme weather, or environmental conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active S-2 or S-1 license.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the HVACR trade.
  • Current “universal” certificate for refrigerant transition and recovery.

Special Requirements

  • Must possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications, including a State of Connecticut heating, piping, and/or cooling license.
  • May be required to complete hazardous materials training programs (e.g., asbestos, PCB, PFAS) consistent with EPA guidelines.
  • Employment contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination, including drug testing, and a criminal background check.

Physical Requirements

  • Adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual/auditory acuity.
  • May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and use protective equipment (e.g., respirators, safety goggles).
  • May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, environmental hazards, or equipment-related risks.

Substitutions

  • Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in a maintenance trade may substitute for two (2) years of General Experience.
  • At UConn: Satisfactory completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may substitute for General and Special Experience.
  • At other State Agencies: Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Intern in a designated maintenance trade may substitute for General and Special Experience.
  • Experience performing technical HVACR duties on a military base, aircraft carrier, or large compound may substitute for General and Special Experience on a year-for-year basis.
