Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with pharmacy, nursing, and other medical personnel to ensure medication and other supplies are available when and where needed.
  • Ensures drug purchasing activities result in safe, effective, and cost-conscious use of medical and pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Participates in the orientation, education, and coordination of training for pharmacy employees, residents, students, and staff.
  • Captures and coordinates medication ordering to maximize availability, minimize wastage, and reduce stock outages.
  • Coordinates the management, communication, and proper record keeping of all medication recalls.
  • Maintains accurate and organized record keeping of all drug and medication supplies purchased, including controlled substance purchases.
  • Monitors for current or potential medication shortages and implements actions to mitigate them in collaboration with Pharmacy leadership.
  • Coordinates the filing, billing, and maintenance of interdepartmental accounts for orders from the Pharmacy to hospital-owned clinics.
  • Provides back-up staffing in purchasing area when needed due to staff vacancies or workload.
  • Coordinates the maintenance of off-site record storage.
  • Prepares medication invoices for authorization for payment signature.
  • Assesses and maintains organization of medication inventory to comply with The Joint Commission standards, state, and federal regulations.
  • Interacts directly or on the telephone with customers in a courteous and professional manner, directing customers with potential problems to the pharmacist, supervisor, or administrator as appropriate.
  • Participates in organizational and departmental performance improvement efforts and facilitates effective communication relative to these initiatives.
  • Maintains a plan for personal development and completes competency validation records.
  • Participates in goal setting, ongoing development, and goals of the team.
  • May participate in establishing and maintaining long-term and short-term goals for the Quality Management Program; monitoring and documenting Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs) for progress in meeting QI goals; and providing guidance and education to staff on Quality Management priorities and projects.
  • May uphold the quality of the Patient Management Program to include the development and reassessment of the program.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • 2+ years experience as a pharmacy technician in a large hospital setting that offers comprehensive pharmacy services
  • Experience in pharmacy purchasing
  • Pharmacy Technician Registration - State Board of Pharmacy

Skills

  • Excellent interdisciplinary communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to perform the professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department
