Purchasing Agent

Summary

The Steel Purchasing Agent is responsible for procuring goods and services in a timely and cost-effective manner while maintaining appropriate quality standards. This role involves contract negotiation, sourcing suppliers, tracking orders, and ensuring inventory needs are met efficiently.

Responsibilities

• Source and evaluate vendors based on price, quality, service, and reliability.
• Negotiate delivery and contract terms.
• Issue purchase orders and follow up with suppliers to ensure timely delivery.
• Monitor market conditions including material costs, industry trends, inventory levels and reorder supplies as needed.
• Maintain accurate records of purchases, pricing, and technical data.
• Work closely with internal departments (e.g., operations, finance, and sales) to determine purchasing needs and specifications.
• Resolve issues related to delayed shipments, quality discrepancies, or supplier performance.
• Ensure compliance with company policies and procurement regulations.

Requirements

• High school diploma required; a bachelor's degree in business, supply chain, or engineering is preferred.
• 2+ years of experience in purchasing, procurement, or supply chain.
• 2+ years of experience within steel mills, service centers, manufacturing, or industrial distribution.
• Understanding of steel grades, specifications (hot-rolled, cold-rolled, galvanized), and metal processing.
• Strong negotiation and communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel); experience with ERP systems preferred.
• Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
• Attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
