About the role

The City of Hampton is seeking a dedicated and safety-focused professional to perform skilled traffic maintenance work involving traffic signs, barriers, and guardrails. This position plays a critical role in supporting traffic operations, public safety, and emergency response efforts throughout the City.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled traffic maintenance work involving traffic signs, barriers, and guardrails.
  • Support traffic operations, public safety, and emergency response efforts.
  • Work effectively with the public and fellow team members.
  • Work in challenging conditions and outside of standard work hours.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Strong experience in traffic operations.
  • Some experience in Thermo-Plastic pavement markings preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of hand tools, carpentry, mechanics, or painting.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with the general public and other personnel.
  • Must be IMSA Signs and Marking certified and work zone certified within 1 year and 6 months of hire date respectively.
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B within 180 days of employment.
  • Safety-sensitive position subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances.
  • Pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Qualifications

  • Frequent contact with the general public and other city employees.
  • May require working beyond a standard 40-hour work week to include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Work conditions can be disagreeable and potentially dangerous.
  • May be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager.

Skills

Strong experience in traffic operations, a solid working knowledge of tools and equipment, and the ability to work effectively with the public and fellow team members.
