About the role
The City of Hampton is seeking a highly skilled Traffic Maintenance professional to perform advanced traffic maintenance work involving traffic signs, barriers, guardrails, pavement markings, and specialized equipment operation while leading and directing a field crew.
Responsibilities
- Perform advanced traffic maintenance work involving traffic signs, barriers, guardrails, pavement markings, and specialized equipment operation.
- Lead and direct a field crew.
- Frequent contact with the general public and other city employees.
- May require working beyond a standard 40-hour work week to include nights, weekends and holidays.
- Work conditions can be disagreeable and potentially dangerous.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Considerable experience in traffic operations.
- Thermo-Plastic pavement markings and equipment required.
- Strong working knowledge of the MUTCD Manual and the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual.
- Significant knowledge of hand tools, carpentry, mechanics or painting.
- MUST possess or have the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B within 180 days of employment.
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B within 180 days of employment.
- Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

- IMSA Signs and Marking certification within 1 year of hire date.
- Work zone certified within 6 months of hire date.
