Job PurposeThe Public Works Technician I provides support and maintenance to the Town's public infrastructure system including streets, sidewalks, storm water & drainage systems, wastewater, facilities, fleet, trash, bridges, parks, open space areas, and traffic control devices as well as several program areas including snow and ice control, weed and brush control, and all landscape and recycling services. The focus primarily being the town’s Parks and Right of Way (ROW) maintenance. The Public Works Technician I is further responsible for ensuring proper compliance with all department and Town values, policies, and procedures as well as applicable laws of the Town of Kersey, State of Colorado, and the United States. Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other nonessential or peripheral duties that may be required. The Town of Kersey retains the right to modify or change the duties or essential functions of the job at any time.Duties may include; mowing, landscaping, raking, blowing, painting, edging, weed-eating, shoveling, digging, spraying weeds, moving furniture, cleaning, equipment operation and cleaning, snow removal, ROW maintenance, doggie pod maintenanceMaintain, repair and service vehicles and equipment; other Town properties, Town owned buildings parks and open spaces and ROWs (Right of Ways) as directedEnsure all tools, equipment and sites are in good order and informs the Director of Operations of needs.Ability to inform the public or businesses of public works decisions, professionally and courteously;Requires safe work practices in the operation of heavy and light duty equipment, town vehicles and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment);Conducts special projects and assignments assigned;Provides support to all town departments as needed;Snow removal of sidewalks and streets as directedPerform other tasks and assignments as directed. Other Duties & Responsibilities Provides (24 hr.) twenty-four-hour-on-call support when necessary;Conducts special projects and assignments as required and/or assigned by the Director of Operations.Assists in preparations and setting up for Town-wide and department special events which may require flexed scheduling and working on holidays;Accepts new work assignments and schedules work hours to meet the needs of the organization;Leads less experienced and seasonal employees in routine tasks; andCooperate with co-workers, supervisors and other departments to foster the spirit of a team environment. Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesThe Public Work Tech I requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with superiors, fellow workers and the public in respectful yet flexible manner. Should possess good decision and problem-solving skills. Must demonstrate sound work ethics as well as dedication to the position and the Town of Kersey while being consistent and fair;Strong written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of the use of proper grammar, punctuation and spelling;Ability and skill to operate general office equipment such as computers, copy machines, printers, phone, fax machine and other general office equipment. Must be able to efficiently communicate by E-mail and conduct Internet research;Requires implementation of safe work practices in the operation of heavy equipment, light equipment, Town vehicles and power tools; and in safe methods of performing maintenance and construction work. Ability to maintain and do minor repair work on Town equipment, vehicles and facilities. Experience and Training Minimum EducationHigh school diploma or GED equivalent. Special Training, Certifications or ExperienceClass B CDL Preferred, or ability to obtain within 1 year of hireColorado Department of Agriculture Pesticide license Preferred, or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire Work Experience in Positions Similar or Related to this Job2 to 4 years of progressive experience working in the public works or parks field for a municipal, county or state government is preferred but not required or equivalent. Other RequirementsMUST have a current and valid Colorado driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.MUST be able to pass a Colorado background check. Environmental ConditionsAbility to perform routine to strenuous physical work for extended periods of time, indoors and outdoors, and during extreme weather conditions. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock. Physical requirementsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.Ability to lift or carry up to 40lbs. and to push or pull up to 60lbs;Ability to conduct activities involving balance, kneeling/bending, and reaching on a limited basis;Ability to participate in routine conversation in person or via telephone and to distinguish telephone, voice and other auditory tones;Ability to distinguish objects in low and bright light using visual capacity including peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision, and far and near acuity to perform responsibilities of the position;Ability to use a computer for moderate periods of time; andAbility to legally operate town owner vehicles and equipment. SupervisionReceives general direction from the Director of Operations - Streets, Parks, Facilities and Fleet. May also receive Directive from other supervisors in town as needed. Will oversee seasonal employees during the summer season to assist in all duties.
