About the Role
Provides for the construction, repair, and maintenance of the City's streets and rights-of-way. Operates a wide variety of light and heavy equipment, tools, and machines to maintain, repair, and improve streets, alleys, rights-of-way, grounds, and related assets for public safety and accessibility.
Responsibilities
- Installs, constructs, and maintains streets, alleys, rights-of-way, grounds, and related assets using light and/or heavy trucks, equipment, hand and power tools, and manual labor.
- Performs asphalt and concrete patching, crack sealing, and sealcoat preparation.
- Installs and maintains street signs, traffic signs, informational signs, and pavement markings.
- Performs tree and brush removal and maintenance, including operation of aerial and chipping equipment.
- Assists in the installation, operation, and maintenance of traffic signals, street lighting, and associated cabinets and cabling.
- Loads and hauls materials for construction and disposal.
- Constructs improvements and maintains City buildings and other assets.
- Removes snow, ice, and storm debris from roadways; applies ice control materials, plows snow, and repairs snow plowing damage.
- Loads and applies sand and de-icing chemicals; removes and hauls snow and ice.
- Sweeps trash, grit, and sediment; loads, hauls, and disposes of debris.
- Cleans and maintains light and/or heavy trucks, equipment, hand and power tools, work areas, and storage areas.
- Performs preventative maintenance, safety checks, and mechanical repairs on vehicles and equipment.
- Supports capital projects, special projects, and City operations, maintenance, and repair.
- Loads and transports personnel and materials to and from work sites; provides labor and equipment operation for special projects or events.
- Orders, delivers, and moves materials and furnishings; establishes and maintains safe work zones in public rights-of-way.
- Estimates quantities of materials (e.g., asphalt for patching, loads for hauling).
- Documents activities utilizing a computer.
- Leads a section work crew and assists in training crew members.
- May assist with duties in utilities, park maintenance, and/or facilities maintenance divisions as needed.
- Participates in training and meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Training or experience in equipment operation and street maintenance.
- Valid Minnesota Driver’s License and Commercial Driver’s License permit.
Qualifications
- Experience in performing snowplow functions for a commercial or governmental agency.
- Valid Minnesota Class A Driver’s License with Tanker endorsement.
- Experience in construction, including road construction, paving, utility and drainage construction, building maintenance, concrete finishing, or construction inspection.
- APWA Public Works Certification, MnDOT Technical Certification(s), or Erosion Control Certification.
- Experience in heavy and light equipment maintenance.
Skills
- Knowledge of local and state laws and regulations regarding equipment operation on public streets.
- Knowledge and skill in proper snow and ice removal techniques.
- Knowledge of small and large engine mechanics.
- Skill in operating heavy equipment and vehicles used in roadway maintenance and snow/ice removal.
- Knowledge of state and federal OSHA standards and requirements.
- Ability to work in all Minnesota weather conditions, including climatic extremes.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions in English (e.g., operating manuals, safety instructions).
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize work, and handle assignments under moderate supervision.
- Ability to work collaboratively and positively in a team environment.
- Ability to work on-call outside of normal work hours.
- Basic analytical ability for standard procedures and tasks.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
- Work is performed in buildings and outdoors, involving moderate duty with the ability to lift, carry, or push up to 60 pounds.
- Exposure to environmental conditions such as heat, cold, toxic chemicals, dust, noise, odors, traffic, and occupational hazards associated with road construction and maintenance.
- Subject to a random drug testing program.
Pay
$29.57 - $41.87 / Hourly
