PUBLIC SAFETY: Adjunct / Substitute Instructor POOL (college credit)

This is an adjunct (part-time/substitute) instructor pool for the San Diego Community College District. Applications are accepted continuously, but do not guarantee immediate openings. If you meet the minimum qualifications, your application will be included in the adjunct pool for possible assignments in fall, spring, and/or summer semesters. Applications are purged approximately one year from submission.

About the Role

Part-time/temporary faculty positions offer flexible hours and the opportunity to assist a diverse group of adult students in achieving their educational goals. Assignments may include a combination of day, evening, weekend, and/or off-campus classes at any of the three college campuses (City, Mesa, Miramar) or continuing education centers. Applicants should live within commuting distance to San Diego.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction in accordance with established curriculum and course outlines.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
  • Fulfill professional responsibilities of a part-time/temporary faculty member.
  • Teach all scheduled classes, including both lecture and lab components as determined by the department.
  • Be available to students outside of class.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Provide quality instruction and create an environment that emphasizes teaching, learning, and free discussion of ideas.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Homeland Security, Emergency Management, Emergency Preparedness, Crisis Management, Disaster Management, or Cybersecurity OR the equivalent.
  • Pending Title 5 Regulations (effective August 8, 2025), the following may also qualify:
    • A bachelor’s degree in a discipline directly related to the teaching assignment, and
    • Six years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment, and
    • CSTI CA Specialized Training Institute Emergency Management Instructor Certification (EMIC) or the ability to obtain it within one year of employment.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds.

Desired Qualifications

  • California Community College Instructor Credential (valid for life).

Licenses/Certificates

  • If you possess a foreign degree, it must be evaluated by a professional association that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute (ACEI). A copy of the evaluation must be submitted with your application.

Pay

  • Classroom assignment: $55.80 - $71.21 per hour.
  • Non-classroom assignment: $41.85 - $53.41 per hour.

Salary placement is contingent upon receipt of official (sealed) transcripts. Instructors with advanced coursework will be placed on the appropriate class and step on the Adjunct College Salary Schedules. Initial placement will be at the first class/step until official transcripts are submitted.

Conditions of Employment

  • Submit official transcripts as stated on the application.
  • Provide a Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam for initial appointment (renewable every 4 years).
  • Undergo fingerprinting via Live Scan at the candidate’s expense (clearance required before the first day of employment).
  • Present original documents for proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
