PUBLIC HEALTH LABORATORY SCIENTIST GENERAL II

About the Role

This position will function as a full-performance laboratory scientist in the Division of Environmental Sciences. The role involves performing, analyzing, interpreting, and reporting test results on environmental and/or food samples submitted to the State Public Health Laboratory. Testing methods include incubations, digestions, extractions, and analyte quantification through approved FDA, EPA, CDC, and/or Standard methods. This work supports the Laboratories Administration's mission to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of Maryland residents in conjunction with State and Federal funded public health initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Perform analytical tests on environmental, biological, or multi-matrix samples.
• Analyze, interpret, and report test results using approved scientific methods.
• Operate under ISO 17025 quality assurance systems (preferred).
• Utilize mass spectrometry instruments (preferred).
• Adhere to EPA, FDA, CDC, and Standard methods for testing.

Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy, or Zoology from an accredited college or university.
• One year of experience working in a chemistry laboratory performing analytical tests on environmental, biological, or multi-matrix samples; or one year of experience in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.

Notes:

• Candidates may substitute additional graduate education (30 credit hours in the above disciplines) for the required experience.
• Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with EPA Method 200.8.
• Experience operating under ISO 17025 quality assurance systems.
• Experience with mass spectrometry instruments.
