About the role

The Public Address Announcer serves as the primary in-venue voice for select University Athletics home competitions and special events. The majority of assignments will include basketball and volleyball, with additional opportunities to announce postseason or special events in soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, and other sports. The PA Announcer may also support signature University Athletics events, including Chase Day, Oracle Day, Senior Nights, Big Red Fridays, championship events, rivalry games, and other special celebrations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the public address voice for assigned University Athletics home competitions and special events.
  • Deliver clear, accurate, enthusiastic, and professional in-game announcements.
  • Introduce teams, starting lineups, coaches, officials, and special guests.
  • Recognize milestones, Senior Night participants, championship teams, and other special moments.
  • Develop and prepare game scripts, announcements, and promotional reads in collaboration with the Athletics Department.
  • Aid with game-day music planning and the overall flow of the in-venue experience.
  • Work closely with Athletics staff, coaches, game management personnel, and event staff.
  • Create an energetic environment while maintaining appropriate neutrality, professionalism, and sportsmanship.
  • Ensure names, pronunciations, team information, and event details are prepared and communicated accurately.
  • Follow all UHS, Bay Area Conference, North Coast Section, and CIF policies and expectations.
  • Represent University High School and University Athletics with professionalism, care, and integrity.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • College coursework or a degree in communications, broadcasting, journalism, sports media, or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Previous public address, broadcasting, emcee, radio, podcasting, or live-event experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of basketball and volleyball is strongly preferred.
  • Availability for afternoon, evening, and occasional weekend competitions throughout the school year.
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to arrive well in advance of assigned events.

  • Authentic energy and enthusiasm to athletic events.
  • Understands sports and the rhythm of a live competition.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of large crowds.
  • Organized, prepared, dependable, and punctual.
  • Pronounces names accurately and takes pride in getting the details right.
  • Understands that high school athletics should be competitive, exciting, and centered on students.
  • Comfortable working respectfully with students, coaches, officials, families, and visiting schools from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Comfortable receiving feedback and collaborating as part of a game-day team.

Compensation

This is a seasonal, part-time position paying $50 per hour. Scheduling is based on the University Athletics home competition and special event calendar.
