About the role

The Telecommunications Officer at Shaw University supports the Campus Police and Security Department, handling front desk customer service and phone coverage for the University.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the efficient receipt and transmission of on-campus emergency and non-emergency requests for police assistance.
  • Provides campus customer service phone coverage, answering all calls and directing them appropriately.
  • Collects pertinent data, determines and contacts appropriate responding units, and maintains calls in the database using real-time entry.
  • Provides responding officers with all necessary information and obtains and maintains officer status throughout each emergency call.
  • Answers and dispatches calls for the Campus Policy and Security Department, processing emergency incidents and routine incidents for assistance.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with a reporting party to collect critical information for officer safety awareness and timely response.
  • Directs calls appropriately with a strong customer service focus and creates and maintains service call log records.
  • Processes inquiries, requests for assistance, and complaints in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Apportions resources to effectively respond to routine and emergency incidents.
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously and works well independently and as part of a team.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma is typically required.
  • College coursework in police science, criminology, or a related field is preferred or equivalent experience.
  • At least two years of experience working in higher education security, public safety agencies, or law enforcement environments.
  • Preferred certification in the In-Service Training Program for Telecommunicators.
  • One year of customer service work experience involving the general public.
  • Telephone technique training is a plus.
