About the Role

Cerritos College is seeking a part-time Geography Instructor to join the Earth Science Department within the Division of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (SEM). The Division is committed to promoting equity, providing service excellence, and ensuring student success through rigorous programs of study in various formats, including traditional on-campus, hybrid, and fully online sections.

The Earth Science Department offers courses in Earth science, geography, geology, environmental science, oceanography, and meteorology. The department is dedicated to high retention and student success, relevant curriculum development, engaging laboratory and field experiences, and fostering collaboration among faculty.

Responsibilities

• Maintain currency with current information, concepts, laws, and ideas in geography and best practices in teaching and learning.
• Check mailbox, voicemail, and email regularly.
• Complete checkout procedures before leaving campus at the end of the academic term.
• Maintain student confidentiality as required by regulation and Board Policy.
• Teach all assigned classes for the full scheduled duration unless excused under Board Policy.
• Notify the Instructional Dean or Office of Academic Affairs in advance of necessary absences and prepare substitute plans to maintain course continuity.
• Teach courses in accordance with the course outlines of record.
• Provide students with opportunities to track their progress.
• Submit a syllabus for each class to the Division Office.
• Keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and academic progress; submit records by published deadlines.
• Submit end-of-session grades, attendance reports, and required information about first-day no-show students by published deadlines.
• Submit textbook order information by published deadlines, ensuring compliance with electronic textbook requirements (e.g., no-cost tests/exams, accessibility for students with disabilities, read-only access for evaluation, and download/print capability).
• Meet all classes during the final examination period and administer final exams at the scheduled time unless approved otherwise.
• Retain all corrected final examination papers for at least one year following the semester or summer term.
• Maintain a safe learning environment in classrooms, laboratories, and other instructional spaces.
• Allow instructional managers or the Instructional Dean to review assignments upon request.
• Demonstrate understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of the student, community, and employee population.

Qualifications

• Master’s in geography, or
• Bachelor’s in geography and Master’s in geology, history, meteorology, or oceanography, or
• Equivalent as defined in the Interdisciplinary Studies section (Page 40 of the 19th Edition Minimum Qualifications Handbook).
• All qualifying degrees/training must be from regionally accredited colleges and/or universities.
• Foreign transcripts must be evaluated by a NACES-certified agency (www.naces.org).

Preferred Qualifications

• College teaching experience in Geography.
• Online course development and/or teaching experience.

Skills

The role requires the following physical and professional abilities, with reasonable accommodations available as needed:

• Ambulatory ability to move to various office and classroom locations, stand, bend, stoop, and reach to set up equipment and provide instruction.
• Sufficient hand-eye coordination and dexterity to write on a board or type on a computer.
• Sufficient visual acuity to read documents and make presentations.
• Sufficient auditory ability to project voice to a group, hear questions and prompts, and carry on routine conversations.
• Ability to lift, push, and pull objects of medium weight (less than 30 lbs.) on an occasional basis.

Conditions of Employment

• Assignments are contingent upon sufficient funding and enrollment.
• Assignments may include day, evening, and/or weekend classes, on-campus or remotely as assigned.
• Candidates must provide proof of California residency prior to employment.
• Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of a loyalty oath per Government Codes 3100-3109 is required.
• Employment requires fingerprinting for a criminal history clearance through the State Department of Justice, submission of an original social security card, and negative TB test results (within the past four years or within the last 60 days if not previously employed in a California school district).
• The District does not provide immigration sponsorship (e.g., H1B Visas).

Pay

$97.54 - $145.02 hourly
