About the Department

The Division of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (SEM) is committed to promoting equity, providing service excellence, and ensuring student success. The division offers programs and courses in biology, chemistry, computer and information sciences, Earth sciences, mathematics, physics, astronomy, and engineering. Courses are available in traditional on-campus, hybrid, and fully online formats, including at multiple educational sites.

The Earth Science Department provides instruction in Earth science, geography, geology, environmental science, oceanography, and meteorology. The department prioritizes high retention and student success, relevant curriculum development, support for Earth science majors, engaging laboratory and field experiences, collaboration among faculty, and community connection.

Responsibilities

All faculty shall:

• Maintain currency with current information, concepts, laws, and ideas in their disciplines and with best practices in teaching and learning.
• Check mailbox, voicemail, and e-mail regularly.
• Complete the checkout form before leaving campus at the end of the academic term.
• Maintain student confidentiality as required by regulation and Board Policy 5040.

All faculty assigned classes shall:

• Teach all assigned classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy, including all scheduled minutes.
• Notify the Instructional Dean or Office of Academic Affairs in advance of necessary absences and prepare plans for continuity of course content.
• Teach courses in accordance with the course outlines of record.
• Provide opportunities for students to be aware of their progress.
• Submit a copy of the syllabus for each class to the Division Office.
• Keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and academic progress, and submit them by published deadlines.
• Submit end-of-session grades, attendance reports, and information about first-day no-show students by published deadlines.
• Submit textbook order information by published deadlines, ensuring electronic textbooks meet specific accessibility and evaluation requirements.
• Meet all classes during the final examination period and give final examinations at the scheduled time unless approved otherwise.
• Keep all corrected final examination papers for at least one year following the close of the semester or summer term.
• Maintain a safe learning environment in classrooms, laboratories, and other instructional spaces.
• Allow the instructional manager or Instructional Dean to review any assignments given during the semester upon request.
• Demonstrate understanding of and sensitivity to meeting the needs of a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic student and employee population.

Requirements

• Master's in geology, geophysics, earth sciences, meteorology, oceanography, or paleontology OR
• Bachelor's in geology AND Master's in geography, physics, or geochemistry OR the equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

• College teaching experience in a variety of Earth science courses, including (but not limited to) Earth science, geology, meteorology, oceanography, and/or natural hazards.
• Online course development and/or teaching experience.

Physical Demands

Physical requirements may be met with or without reasonable accommodations. Includes:

• Ambulatory ability to move to various office and classroom locations, stand, bend, stoop, and reach to set up equipment.
• Sufficient hand-eye coordination and dexterity to write on a board or type on a computer.
• Sufficient visual acuity to read documents and make presentations.
• Sufficient auditory ability to project voice, hear questions, and carry on conversations.
• Ability to lift, push, and pull objects of medium weight (less than 30 lbs.) on an occasional basis.

Conditions of Employment

• Assignments are contingent upon sufficient funding and enrollment.
• Assignments may include day, evening, and/or weekend classes.
• Must obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance, produce an original social security card, and submit negative TB test results before employment.
• Must be able to teach on-campus or remotely as assigned.
• Must have availability to teach Fall 2026 classes occurring Tuesday/Thursday mornings.
• Must provide proof of California residency prior to employment.
• Must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States and sign a loyalty oath per Government Codes 3100-3109.
• The District does not provide immigration sponsorships such as H1B Visas.
