PT Chemistry Instructor

Part-time faculty position teaching chemistry courses in lecture and laboratory settings.

About the Role

The Chemistry Department at Cerritos College seeks a part-time instructor to teach courses that serve students preparing for careers in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, geology, engineering, teaching, nursing, dental hygiene, physical therapy, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, chiropractic, criminology, forensics, environmental science, forestry, and more. Classes are offered in day and evening formats, both on-campus and in hybrid or fully online sections.

Responsibilities

• Maintain currency with current information, concepts, laws, and ideas in chemistry and best practices in teaching and learning.
• Teach all assigned classes for the full scheduled duration, including final examination periods.
• Prepare and submit course syllabi, textbook orders, and student records (enrollment, attendance, academic progress, grades) by published deadlines.
• Provide opportunities for students to track their progress and maintain accurate records.
• Ensure continuity of course content in cases of necessary absence by notifying the Instructional Dean or Office of Academic Affairs and arranging for a substitute if assigned.
• Teach courses in accordance with the course outlines of record.
• Keep corrected final examination papers for at least one year following the close of the semester or summer term.
• Maintain a safe learning environment in classrooms, laboratories, and other instructional spaces.
• Allow instructional managers or the Instructional Dean to review assignments upon request.
• Check mailbox, voicemail, and email regularly.
• Complete checkout forms before leaving campus at the end of the academic term.
• Maintain student confidentiality as required by regulation and Board Policy 5040.
• Demonstrate understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of the student, community, and employee population.

Requirements

• Master’s in chemistry, OR
• Bachelor’s in chemistry or biochemistry AND Master’s in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology, or geochemistry, OR the equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

• College-level teaching experience in Chemistry lectures and labs.

Skills

• Ambulatory ability to move to various office and classroom locations, stand, bend, stoop, and reach to set up equipment and provide instruction.
• Sufficient hand-eye coordination and dexterity to write on a board or type on a computer.
• Sufficient visual acuity to read documents and make presentations.
• Sufficient auditory ability to project voice to a group, hear questions and prompts, and carry on routine conversations.
• Ability to lift, push, and pull objects of medium weight (less than 30 lbs.) on an occasional basis.

Conditions of Employment

• Assignments are contingent upon sufficient funding and enrollment.
• Assignments may include day, evening, and/or weekend classes.
• Must be available to teach Fall 2026 classes occurring Monday mornings and Monday/Wednesday afternoons.
• Must provide proof of California residency prior to employment.
• Must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States and sign a loyalty oath per Government Codes 3100-3109.
• Must obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance through the State Department of Justice and remit the required fee.
• Must produce an original social security card and submit negative TB test results (within the past four years or within the last 60 days if not previously employed in a California school district).
• Must be able to teach on-campus or remotely as assigned.

Pay

$97.54 - $145.02 hourly.
