Supervisory-level role requiring thorough knowledge of professional nursing to coordinate medical and psychiatric nursing services within a specialized mental health unit.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and/or assist in nursing assessments, interventions, planning, evaluation, and delivery of medical and psychiatric nursing services to patient/offenders.
  • Evaluate performance and counsel/advise staff in the psychiatric nursing department, ensuring all care meets the needs of offenders and special populations.
  • Communicate with institution Health Care Administrators (HCA) to coordinate doctor call and chronic care clinic appointments.
  • Coordinate sick call on specialized mental health units.
  • Serve on multi-disciplinary treatment teams as needed.
  • Assist in developing and implementing program policies and procedures.
  • Oversee all psychiatric nursing department services, ensuring care aligns with the needs of special populations.
  • Ensure timely completion of daily, monthly, and special reports/action plans (including Quality Improvement).
  • Assist in psychiatric nursing assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for delivery of services to offenders.
  • Implement quality improvement guidelines and recommendations.
  • Comply with all facility and DRC rules, procedures, and policies; monitor staff compliance.
  • Serve on the quality improvement committee as needed.
  • Coordinate psychiatric audits of programs based on recommendations.
  • Review incident reports and recommend/implement changes to address issues in the psychiatric nursing department.
  • Provide professional nursing services as needed.
  • Organize, develop, and deliver training for treatment and facility staff on psychiatric nursing programs, policies, and procedures (including age- and gender-specific care).
  • Ensure tracking systems are in place for AIMS, psychotropic medication expiration dates, metabolic syndrome, informed consents, and psychiatrist/prescriber appointments.
  • Maintain proficiency in the electronic health record and provide training to staff.
  • Ensure intervention for offenders below medication compliance as established in policy.
  • Directly supervise staff, including assigning work, reviewing performance, providing feedback, establishing goals, and evaluating progress.
  • Make timely decisions on staffing matters (e.g., approving/disapproving leave or overtime, conducting staff meetings, recommending disciplinary action).
  • Develop and maintain nursing staff schedules.
  • Conduct interviews and recommend hiring decisions.
  • Assist with recruitment and retention of psychiatric nursing staff and temporary contract coverage.
  • Attend trainings and conferences.
  • Perform other related duties (e.g., special projects, audit teams, committees) as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current license as a registered professional nurse in the state of Ohio, issued by the Board of Nursing per Section 4723.03 of the Revised Code.
  • 24 months of experience in psychiatric nursing or delivering nursing services to persons with developmental disabilities.
  • 3 months of training or experience in employee training and development.
  • 3 courses or 9 months of experience in public relations.
  • 3 courses or 9 months of experience in counseling.
  • Equivalent combinations of the above qualifications may substitute for experience requirements, but not for the mandated licensure.
