Job Summary

Assists the patient care team in assessing, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating the medical and clinical treatment plans of the patient population including neonatal to geriatric patient types, acting within the guidelines of specific protocols established by the Medical Director.

Qualifications

  • Vocational / Technical Degree in Emergency Medical Services (Required)
  • 2 year / Associate Degree in Emergency Medical Services (Preferred)
  • 1+ years Emergency Medicine Experience (Required)
  • 1+ years Paramedic Experience (Preferred)
  • Required Certifications/Licensures:
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Valid State of Georgia Paramedic license
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or obtained within 6 months of hire
    • Crisis Response Training required within 6 months of hire
  • Preferred Certifications/Licensures:
    • Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)
    • International Trauma Life Support (ITLS)

PARAMEDIC CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides direct patient care as a member of the emergency care team.
  • Patient care skills as defined by Georgia statutes for Paramedics in the state of Georgia.
  • Primary clinical duties will include rotations to any shift, based on patient care needs.
  • Receive and/or give report to supervisor or nurse as needed.
  • Notify physician and (or) RN of significant changes in patient's response to treatment and care, symptoms of infection, disease, stress, reactions to medications, etc.
  • Takes patient's medical and social history.
  • Arranges for ordered diagnostic and therapeutic services.
  • Aids in the development of patient care plan in consultation with supervisor or physician.
  • Admits, transfers, transcribes orders, charts, completes charges, and performs clerical duties when necessary.
  • Takes and records vital signs, measures and records intake and output, collects specimens; performs irrigation's; applies dressings, bandages, pads, compresses, packs, etc.
  • Prepares and administers prescribed medications including intravenous solutions. Performs prescribed treatments.
  • Observes and records: medications and treatments and patient reaction/response to same.
  • Recognizes emergencies and responds with proper protocol, i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen, pulmonary ventilations by esophageal and endotracheal tube, endotracheal suction, emergency drugs, defibrillation, application of medical equipment, others, as established by medical staff.
  • Performs catheterizations, suctioning, lavage, I.V.; applies sterile dressings; monitors patients.
  • Applies first aid, performs patient assessment.
  • Sets up and prepares instruments, supplies, equipment and drugs and assists physician in treating patient.
  • Responds to code calls and may direct code if no physician is available.
  • Advanced airway management skills will be performed under direction of medical director (i.e. oral and nasal endotracheal intubations).
  • Medsication administration includes parenteral injections of: diuretics, anticonvulsants, hypertonic glucose, antihistamines, bronchodilators, emetics, narcotic antagonists, opioid antagonists, antiarrhythmic agents, vagolytic agents, chronotropic agents, alkalizing agents, analgesic agents, and vasopressor agents.
  • Performs catheterizations, suctioning, lavage, peripheral intravenous catheter placement; applies sterile dressings; monitors patients.
  • Applies first aid, performs patient assessment.
  • Obtains RN review on all patient assessments.
  • Sets up and prepares instruments, supplies, equipment and drugs and assists physician in treating patient.
  • When necessary, responds to code calls.
  • Advanced airway management skills will be performed under direction of medical director (i.e. oral and nasal endotracheal intubations).
  • Keeps supply carts equipped and ready for use.
  • Supports discharge / transfer process and patient escort / transport.

  • Conforms to required style and format.
  • Develops expected outcomes that provide direction for continuity of care.
  • Involves patient/family and other disciplines to determine expected outcomes.
  • Includes the patient and others involved in the care in the evaluation process.
  • Evaluates the plan in relation to patient responses and expected outcomes.
  • Documents the results of the evaluation.

Technology and Equipment Use

  • Demonstrates technical skill in using equipment appropriate for role.
  • Understands equipment operation.
  • Maintains equipment in working order.
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems.
  • Uses technology to increase productivity.
  • Adapts to new technology.

Additional Duties

  • Adheres to the hospital and departmental attendance and punctuality guidelines.
  • Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with the core values, mission, and vision of the organization.
  • Completes all job functions as per departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility (i.e., self-education, attends ongoing educational programs).
  • Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services and requirements and competency evaluations on time.
  • Demonstrates competency at all levels in providing care to all patients based on age, sex, weight, and demonstrated needs.
  • For non-clinical areas, has attended training and demonstrates usage of age-specific customer service skills.
  • Wears protective clothing and equipment as appropriate.
