About the role
We are looking for a Property Accountant to support the financial operations of a portfolio of commercial real estate assets in New York. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented accounting specialist who enjoys detailed reporting, collaborative problem-solving, and working across multiple property and investment structures. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to core accounting processes, partner reporting, and ongoing improvements that strengthen accuracy and efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Oversee key portions of monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities, producing accurate financial statements including balance sheets and income statements.
- Prepare recurring financial reporting packages for joint venture stakeholders and lending partners, ensuring information is timely and complete.
- Record journal entries for routine and complex transactions, including accruals, amortization activity, and account reclassifications.
- Analyze financial results against budgets and prior reporting periods, highlighting major variances and explaining underlying drivers.
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger through reconciliations, transaction reviews, and accurate bookkeeping practices.
- Compile audit support schedules and detailed work papers to assist with internal and external review processes.
- Develop footnotes and supplemental schedules that support quarterly and annual corporate reporting requirements.
- Assist with accounting activities tied to acquisitions, dispositions, and the onboarding of newly added properties or joint ventures, including setup, closing entries, and coordination with relevant teams.
- Partner with internal departments and external parties to promote compliance with accounting policies, reporting standards, and control requirements.
- Recommend and support process improvements that enhance the quality, efficiency, and consistency of accounting operations.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of accounting experience, preferably with direct exposure to property or commercial real estate accounting.
- Working knowledge of month-end close procedures, accrual-based accounting, and general ledger maintenance.
- Experience preparing financial statements, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for audits or reporting cycles.
- Proficiency with property accounting systems such as Yardi and/or MRI software.
- Ability to review financial data, investigate variances, and communicate findings clearly.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple properties, deadlines, and reporting priorities.
- Familiarity with commercial real estate structures, including joint ventures, lenders, and property-level reporting expectations.
