About the Opportunity
The Property Accountant is responsible for managing the financial accounting and reporting functions for an assigned portfolio of properties. This role supports property and project managers by providing strategic financial planning and reporting, ensuring compliance with financial covenants, and maintaining accurate financial records. The position contributes to the organization’s operational success by delivering timely and precise financial information and fostering strong client relationships.
Responsibilities
- Partner consultatively with Property and Project Managers on strategic financial planning, budget variances, and complex reporting issues
- Provide proactive, customer-focused accounting and financial services to all internal stakeholders and external clients
- Manage the full-cycle general ledger accounting, accounts reconciliation, and structural financial reporting for an assigned multi-unit property portfolio
- Liaise directly with external accounting firms, tax professionals, and third-party auditors to facilitate annual reviews and compliance checks
- Master the company’s enterprise financial reporting software suite, ensuring optimal data integrity and transaction mapping
- Execute the timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and fiscal year-end closing of assigned property accounting records
- Prepare and file all mandatory monthly corporate accounting reports, local disclosures, and property-level statements
- Maintain highly organized, audit-ready balance sheet accounts, electronic filing systems, and monthly bank reconciliations
- Cover comprehensive data audits and historical cleanup of complex accounting records and ledger discrepancies as needed
- Issue formalized, high-quality monthly and year-end financial reporting packages to corporate leadership and investors
- Participate actively in the preparation, modeling, and analysis of annual property operating budgets and capital expenditure plans
- Monitor, review, and ensure continuous property-level compliance with external financial loan covenants and banking requirements
- Maintain an up-to-date task management list to track workflow deadlines, internal priorities, and close calendars
- Demonstrate operational responsiveness and urgency when handling escalated financial inquiries or transaction anomalies
- Contribute positively to collaborative team performance, peer mentoring, and the cross-functional adoption of accounting best practices
Requirements
- Minimum of two years of dedicated professional experience in apartment, multifamily residential, or property association accounting
- At least three years of progressive corporate accounting experience (prior experience in a team-lead or supervisory capacity is a plus)
- Solid fundamental understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and core general ledger accounting skills
- Strong technical proficiency with accounting software systems; direct hands-on experience with property management platforms like AppFolio, Yardi, or RealPage is a definitive advantage
- High proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (particularly intermediate to advanced Excel) and professional PDF document editors
- Exceptional organizational, workload prioritization, and time management skills to handle competing close deadlines
- Educational background: College degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related quantitative field is highly preferred
Pay Range and Compensation Package
Target annual base salary range: $65,000.00 to $70,000.00 USD
Final salary placement within this range will be determined based on localized market geography, specific property management platform expertise, and total years of real estate sector accounting experience
