Proofreader
About the Role
An entry-level proofreading professional with strong computer, linguistic, and editing skills. Under the guidance of senior proofreading staff, plans their workload to complete projects in multiple English dialects and non-English languages.
Responsibilities
- Proofreads and edits English text with an eye for consistency, professional tone, accuracy, structure, and adherence to company style under the guidance of senior proofreading staff.
- Reviews bluelines for printed materials.
- Proofreads for consistency by comparison in all languages.
- Works closely with members of the translation, production, and curriculum teams to resolve questions.
- Answers technical and stylistic questions and helps maintain company’s Style Guide and Proofreader Guide under the guidance of senior proofreading staff.
- Clarifies meaning of phrases and terms for translation.
- All other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- An Associate's degree in linguistics, writing/editing, or equivalent.
- Excellent English language skills, including strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Familiarity with applying an established style to projects (e.g., the Chicago Manual of Style).
- Familiarity with proofreading both hard copy and electronic formats (e.g., Microsoft Word, Adobe Reader).
- Experience proofreading for consistency by comparison in non-English languages.
- Experience reviewing technical documentation.
- Experience proofreading with Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature.
- Experience with Microsoft Word’s index and table of contents features.
Essential Job Functions

- Frequent computer use and sitting for long periods of time.
- Ability to learn how to use new computer software programs.
- Concentrating for long periods of time.
- Extensive verbal and written communication.
- Frequent collaboration with coworkers.
- Occasional travel of less than 10% may be required.
