About the Role

This position oversees the coordination, general administrative, review, and technical support activities to review plans submitted requesting excavation(s) within the City of Houston’s right-of-way. The permit request and the plans must be in compliance with all City of Houston ordinances.

Responsibilities

  • Review and approve Street Cut Permit Applications.
  • Direct personnel in the review of Street Cut permit requests.
  • Review engineering plan and profile for accuracy and compliance with City of Houston ordinances and design.
  • Handle inquiries from the general public and staff personnel.
  • Serve as a liaison to departments, agencies, developers, and contractors.
  • Assist customers with questions concerning their permit request and plans.
  • Coordinate and monitor equipment and system repair.
  • Assist supervisors in completing special assignments.

Working Conditions

The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. This is a Department of Houston Public Works position at the Tier III Level.

Qualifications

  • Educational Requirements: Requires an Associate's degree in Engineering, Drafting, Designing, or a closely related field. A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Drafting, Design, or a closely related field may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.
  • Experience Requirements: Two (2) years of related experience, such as surveying, engineering, drafting, and/or designing. Directly related professional experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • License Requirements: May require a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

Preferences

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

General Information

Safety Impact Position: Yes. If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
