About the role

The Fabrication Technician (FT) is responsible for performing a wide variety of installation duties on technology projects primarily in our shop build environments. This position prepares for the actual work that gets deployed in clients’ buildings, with occasional on-site work. You will coordinate with project management and other teams to interpret drawing packages and create portions of finished systems, including AV technology and cabling.

Responsibilities

  • Physical installation of a wide variety of technology into diverse locations.
  • Accurately cut cables for bench fabrication to assigned lengths; sort and flag cut cables for rack lacing or shipment to project sites.
  • Prepare and label cables for fabrication by hand or using automated striping machines per Diversified standards.
  • Execute and test cable terminations for all Broadcast, Network, and A/V connectors.
  • Read and understand cable wire lists, project drawings, and documentation for cable fabrication.
  • Prep and pack racks for shipment to job sites.
  • Prepare equipment racks for staging, including wire lacing, installation of power strips, grounding bars, jack-fields, etc.
  • Mount equipment into racks and terminate all wiring and connections as per technical drawings.
  • Read and understand functional design drawings and equipment rack diagrams.
  • Provide consistent technical performance and flexibility in work schedule, including periodic or extended overtime to meet fabrication deadlines.
  • Build and wire custom panels from engineering drawings.
  • Handle, install, terminate, and test fiber optic cables.
  • Maintain relationships with CAD and Engineering teams to provide feedback for efficiencies during fabrication.
  • Guide other fabrication staff in interpreting drawings and enhancing builds.
  • Maintain an organized work environment, including cleanliness of the shop and job sites.
  • Maintain tools, test equipment, and materials inventories; keep documentation orderly.
  • Track and maintain personal licenses, certifications, and qualifications (some states have specific requirements).
  • Maintain daily records of time worked on specific projects for timesheet entry.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • AVIXA CTS Certification (strongly encouraged).
  • AVIXA CTS-I Certification (desired).
  • Minimum of 1 year of related industry experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and adherence to insurance requirements.
  • OSHA 30 Certificate (preferred before field work; NYC OSHA30 preferred).
  • Other relevant certifications may be required or preferred based on technology focus.

Skills

  • Familiarity with a wide range of audio, video, and networking equipment.
  • Knowledge of low voltage electrical concepts.
  • Basic carpentry and/or installation skills.
  • Strong verbal communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve technical problems.
  • Ability to read and interpret project drawings and documentation.

Physical Demands

The role may expose you to construction site conditions. You will be responsible for your safety and compliance with all safety regulations, including the use of PPE. The position requires:

  • Spending at least 50% of your time on your feet and mobile around job sites.
  • Occasional climbing of ladders and stairs.
  • Lifting and/or moving materials up to 40 pounds.
  • Regular use of keyboards, test equipment, and controls for installation projects.
  • Specific vision abilities, including close, distance, peripheral, and depth vision.
  • When not on construction sites, normal office conditions apply, including use of office equipment.

Travel

Frequent travel by car and occasional airplane trips are required. You must possess a valid driver’s license and use your own vehicle (mileage reimbursed at the corporate rate). Travel breakdown:

  • 70-90% local travel to job sites (within a 2-hour driving distance each way).
  • Up to 20% remote travel, with less than 10% required on a regular basis.
