About the Role

The Project Manager assumes profit and loss responsibility for executing all assigned project contracts and customer accounts. This role ensures projects are completed safely, with the highest quality, and at the lowest cost.

Responsibilities

  • Account Management (10%)
    • Own and manage assigned accounts to ensure long-term customer satisfaction, revenue growth, and opportunities.
    • Evaluate bidding, material buyouts, and negotiating opportunities.
    • Maintain effective communication with Alterman personnel regarding relevant duties.
    • Identify cross-selling opportunities with other departments.
    • Report significant problems to Senior Project Manager or Director and propose solutions.
  • Project Planning (10%)
    • Collaborate with Preconstruction and Project Support groups to maximize profit opportunities.
    • Lead project kickoff meetings and work sessions with estimating and support teams.
    • Prepare breakdown of estimates using Labor Analysis Workflow (LAW) Standard Operating Procedures.
    • Review plans and specifications.
    • Initiate appropriate safety programs.
  • Project Management (Office) (30%)
    • Manage projects in accordance with Alterman’s procedures and policies.
    • Complete project startup procedures, including:
      • Making projections, budgeting, and job cost entry for materials, labor, subcontracts, LAW, Packaged Alterman Construction Kits (PACK), and Direct Job Expenses (DJE).
      • Project scheduling for construction, material release(s), labor, and cash flow.
      • Interpreting contracts and providing input to the project team.
    • Lead 25-50-75-90-100% project review meetings and prepare documentation for small to midsized projects; conduct monthly reviews for large-scale projects.
    • Prepare agendas and run internal meetings as needed.
    • Establish project schedule of values for fixed-sum contracts and assist in billing preparation for fee-based projects.
    • Prepare accurate job cost projections regularly.
    • Prepare change order proposals and quotations.
    • Review, request, or create quotations and bills of materials.
    • Review and process shop drawings.
    • Prepare major purchase orders following pricing and scope evaluations.
    • Maintain material files (purchase orders, memos, quotes, shop drawings, test reports, action item lists, field record drawings, etc.).
    • Coordinate with Purchasing to procure and deliver materials within budget.
    • Arrange selection and placement of key supervisory personnel with Workforce Development and Preplanning/Productivity Superintendent; evaluate performance and address deficiencies.
    • Coordinate with Workforce Development and Preplanning/Productivity Superintendent to meet labor budgets.
    • Complete project closeout procedures, including:
      • Addressing punch list items, signoff, final billing, retainage, collections, warranty, returns, closing purchase orders, finalizing record documents, AHJ inspections, and updating project descriptions and Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
      • Scheduling and leading closeout meetings and preparing closeout documents.
  • Project Management (Field) (15%)
    • Complete project startup procedures, including projections and contract interpretation.
    • Attend on-site project meetings.
    • Prepare accurate job cost projections regularly.
    • Review and process shop drawings.
    • Arrange selection and placement of key supervisory personnel; evaluate performance and address deficiencies.
    • Coordinate with Workforce Development and Preplanning/Productivity Superintendent to meet labor budgets.
    • Complete project closeout procedures, including addressing punch list items and updating Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
  • Leadership & Process Improvement (15%)
    • Oversee and support direct reports to ensure fulfillment of job responsibilities.
    • Conduct regular performance reviews.
    • Work with department director or Senior Project Manager to identify critical path activities and prepare process documentation.
    • Ensure staff understand and support critical path activities.
    • Review and adjust documentation annually to reflect current processes.
  • Other Duties (10%)
    • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

Must meet one of the following pathways:

  • Completion of Inside Wireman Apprenticeship or equivalent, 2 years’ experience in a field supervisory position, and successful completion of the 2-year Assistant Project Manager program.
  • Associate degree in Business Management, Construction Management, or Construction Engineering and successful completion of the 2-year Assistant Project Manager program.
  • 2 years’ experience as a Project Manager in the electrical construction industry.

Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective reasoning and judgment skills.
  • Proficient with Primavera, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Suite, accounting software, estimating software, and other required systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret contract documents, plans, specifications, and requirements.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and capitalize on project opportunities.
  • Working knowledge of trade terms, materials, methods, codes, contract/specification language, and bidding methods.
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Code, electrical engineering fundamentals, purchasing/buying processes, and accounting concepts.
  • Ability to complete continuous education courses and trainings as required.

Work Environment

Primarily office-based with some travel required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to use hands or fingers to handle objects, tools, or controls; manual dexterity for computer data entry.
  • Ability to talk and hear.
  • Frequent sitting; occasional standing, walking, climbing, balancing, crouching, stooping, or kneeling.
  • Ability to safely operate a vehicle for travel to and from job sites.
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to safely maneuver in a construction environment.
  • Close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception required.
