Project Architect (contract)

About the role

Join a high-visibility, multi-year Customer Information System modernization program at a leading energy company, transitioning from a 25-year-old legacy billing platform to a modern SAP S/4 HANA for Utilities and Salesforce Energy and Utilities Cloud ecosystem. As the CIS Solution Architect, you will serve as a key member of the enterprise Architecture team, designing and governing end-to-end solutions across SAP, Salesforce, and supporting enterprise systems. You will apply rigorous architectural principles — including SAP Clean Core and established Architecture Tenets — across complex hybrid cloud and on-premise landscapes, guiding a program that will reshape how the organization serves millions of utility customers for decades to come. This is a contractor engagement with potential for conversion, based in Minneapolis, MN or Denver, CO, operating on a hybrid schedule.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain end-to-end solution architecture for key financial, payment, and collections business processes spanning SAP S/4 HANA Utilities, Salesforce Energy and Utilities Cloud, and supporting enterprise systems
• Enforce SAP Clean Core principles and minimize customizations across all solution domains
• Identify emerging technology capabilities and integration patterns that align with enterprise architecture tenets and guidelines
• Govern architectural standards and best practices throughout the full program lifecycle, from blueprinting through implementation validation
• Lead solution design activities and ensure that development and configuration work aligns with approved architecture
• Collaborate closely with functional, technical, and integration teams to ensure cohesive, well-integrated solutions
• Ensure solutions meet enterprise requirements for resiliency, scalability, security, observability, and performance
• Conduct architecture reviews and present recommendations and findings at Architecture Review Boards
• Draft architecture options, evaluate trade-offs, and deliver clear, well-reasoned recommendations to stakeholders
• Validate implemented solutions against approved architectural designs and flag deviations for remediation
• Contribute to blueprinting sessions and solution governance activities across the multi-year program timeline

Skills

• Enterprise solution architecture across complex, multi-system hybrid cloud and on-premise landscapes
• SAP S/4 HANA Utilities (IS-U) functional and technical architecture
• SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) and Integration Suite design and governance
• Cloud architecture solutioning with strong preference for AWS
• Integration and data architecture including SAP BTP, AWS, and IBM ACE
• Salesforce platform architecture, preferably Energy and Utilities Cloud
• SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) and data platform architecture
• Strong understanding of security, scalability, observability, resiliency, and performance design principles
• Architectural governance, standards enforcement, and review board facilitation
• Ability to draft architecture options with clear trade-off analysis and actionable recommendations
• Familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, TOGAF, and LeanIX
• Strong communication and stakeholder collaboration skills across functional and technical audiences

Experience

• 10+ years of progressive solution architecture experience across enterprise-scale programs
• 2+ years of hands-on experience with SAP S/4 HANA Utilities (IS-U)
• 2+ years of experience with SAP BTP and Integration Suite
• 4+ years of experience architecting solutions on AWS
• Demonstrated experience governing architecture across multi-system, hybrid cloud environments
• Experience leading architecture on large-scale, multi-year transformation programs preferred
• Utility industry experience is a plus

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or equivalent practical experience preferred
• SAP Certified Solution Architect or SAP Certified Technology Professional preferred
• TOGAF certification or equivalent enterprise architecture framework training preferred

Pay

83.08 - 110.77 USD hourly
