About the role
The Project Accountant is responsible for financial tracking, reporting, and analysis related to construction projects. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate project accounting, cost control, and financial compliance.
Responsibilities
- Maintain detailed project financial records, including budgets, expenditures, and revenue recognition.
- Monitor project costs, analyze variances, and ensure adherence to budgetary constraints.
- Prepare and submit accurate client invoices and progress billings in accordance with project contracts.
- Collaborate with project managers to verify billing accuracy.
- Analyze project costs and expenses, identifying cost-saving opportunities and potential overruns.
- Aid in preparing cost estimates for new projects and change orders.
- Generate and distribute financial reports, including project P&L statements and cash flow analysis.
- Prepare financial summaries and forecasts for project stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with project contracts, including payment terms, milestone requirements, and reporting obligations.
- Collaborate with legal and project teams to address contract-related issues.
- Monitor project revenue recognition, ensuring alignment with accounting standards and project milestones.
- Aid in revenue recognition calculations.
- Provide documentation and support during internal and external audits of project financials.
- Address audit findings and implement corrective actions.
- Facilitate the financial closeout of completed projects, including final billing and reconciliation.
- Prepare financial summaries and lessons learned reports.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) is a plus.
- 2-3 years of experience in project accounting, preferably in the construction or engineering industry.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional project teams.
- Knowledge of project management software and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is beneficial.
Qualifications
- A “disabled veteran” is one of the following:
