About the Role

This position provides specialized and general clerical assistance to the office of the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. The role involves routine and non-routine office functions, including preparing documents and correspondence, sorting, copying, filing, and maintaining office supplies.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare reports for Cemetery Administrators.
  • Assist in budget preparation and management.
  • Serve as purchase card holder and timekeeper.
  • Represent the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona when interacting with funeral directors, families, and honor guard members during committal services or burials.
  • Provide information to bereaved family members regarding gravesite and marker details.
  • Retrieve gravesite information from the KIOSK or BOSS (electronic burial register) to assist families in locating loved ones' gravesites.
  • Maintain control of cemetery traffic, direct funeral corteges, and accompany families to committal shelters and gravesites.
  • Provide veteran burial benefit information and answer general questions from family members and visitors.
  • Assist visitors and family members in locating gravesites.
  • Perform public outreach as needed.

Schedule

  • Required to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
  • May include occasional weekends.
  • Staff may be required to work on Federal holidays or weekends if the holiday falls on a Monday or Friday.
  • All staff must work Memorial Day and Veterans Day each year.
  • Overtime, weekends, and holidays may be required to meet cemetery needs.
  • Occasional emergency overtime may require staff to return to the facility outside of regular hours.

Compressed/flexible schedules and telework are not available. This is not a virtual or remote position.

Requirements

  • Subject to a background/security investigation.
  • May be required to undergo designated and/or random drug testing.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must serve a probationary period if selected.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
  • Selected applicants will complete an online onboarding process.
  • Must be able to type at least 40 words per minute.
  • Must possess and maintain a REAL ID-compliant valid state driver’s license.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet specialized experience and time-in-grade requirements within 45 days of the closing date of this announcement (08/18/2026).

Time-In-Grade Requirement

  • Current Federal employees must have held a GS grade for at least 52 weeks at the next lower grade (GS-04) within the past 52 weeks.
  • An SF-50 demonstrating time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with application materials.

Specialized Experience

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-4), including:

  • Interacting with customers and staff.
  • Gathering data and coordinating meetings.
  • Establishing and maintaining an efficient filing system.
  • Using automated data processing equipment to generate reports.
  • Establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.

Education Substitution

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, or 4 years of education above high school leading to such a degree, may substitute for experience.
  • Education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the role.

Experience includes paid and unpaid work, such as volunteer experience through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. Part-time experience will be credited based on time spent in appropriate activities.

Physical Requirements

Work is primarily sedentary and performed in an office environment.

Education

A transcript must be submitted if qualifying based on education. Education must be accredited by an institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
