About the Role

Under direct supervision, the Program Specialist will be assigned to work at one of various Recreation facilities. This position will assist in the planning, organization and coordination of recreational activities, community programs, facility reservations and special events.

Responsibilities

  • Active involvement with youth, teens, and seniors on a daily basis
  • Scheduling and planning special events and trips
  • Planning monthly activity calendars
  • Prepare and distribute promotional material concerning new or ongoing programs and events
  • Supervise staff and activities in the absence of supervisor/coordinator
  • Assist with scheduling of staff
  • Maintain program equipment, files, records, and inventory
  • Assist with the set-up and tear down of recreation activities
  • Provide assistance with the day to day operation
  • May perform additional duties as required

Facility-Specific Duties

Social Media: Manage and enhance the City's online presence across various social media platforms. Develop and execute social media strategies, produce engaging content, and promote city events, initiatives, and services to foster community engagement and strengthen the City's reputation.

Arts and Recreation Center (ARC): Supervise the coordination of art-based programs, special events and excursions, and other recreational activities; participate in active involvement of youth, ages 5-18, on a daily basis; assist in the set-up and tear down of art exhibits; assist in the set-up and breakdown of stage, audio and sound equipment, and of facility rental equipment including tables and chairs; assist with city wide special events and excursions.

Barnes Park: Supervise youth and teens on a daily basis; assist with the coordination of a variety of social services programs and recreation programs including sports, games and special events.

Before and After School Program (BASIC): Supervise the coordination of art-based programs, special events and excursions, recreational activities, and limited operations of the Baldwin Park Historical Museum; participate in the daily engagement and supervision of youth ages 5–18; assist with the set-up and tear down of art exhibits; assist with the set-up and breakdown of stage, audio, sound, and facility rental equipment, including tables and chairs; assist with City-wide special events and excursions.

Community Center: Interact with the public on a daily basis; perform clerical duties such as handle high volume of calls and relay messages; assist the public by receiving, distributing and filing a wide variety of materials and payments in accordance with prescribed program procedures; assist with class registrations; collect fees and admissions; assist with preparing collections for audit and deposit and keep accurate records.

Senior Center: Supervise seniors on a daily basis; coordinate the recreation programs including senior services, special events, and other recreational activities; assist with monthly shopping as needed; assist with city wide special events and excursions.

Teen Center & Skate Park: Supervise the recreation programs including teen services, special events and excursions, and other recreational activities; participate in active involvement of teens on a daily basis; assist in the coordination of recreational programs targeting middle school and high school teens including sports, games, special activities and trips.

Family Service Center: Coordinate with social service agencies, school staff, community groups, private practitioners, clergy, and police regarding the needs of youth, families and the public in general. Maintain a variety of records, including registrations, reservations, permission slips, purchasing, accidents, and vandalism; provide consultation services to groups, present information to community based organizations, initiate and maintain communications with at-risk families; supervise classes, workshops, and activities for individuals and families conducted in the Family Services Center; respond to public inquiries about the programs and services relating to the Family Services Center; prepare for publication a variety of printed materials and related communications regarding the Family Services Center programs.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to assist with the coordination and implementation of recreation activities, programs and events
  • Basic proficiency of Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and Outlook software programs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to effectively interact with City staff, volunteers, and the public
  • Ability to enforce rules and regulation to assure the safety and welfare of participants and exhibits
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to create a "team" environment by maintaining a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is highly desirable

Qualifications

  • Education equivalent to High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • College level course in recreation or related field is preferred
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of submitting application
  • Possess a valid California Driver's License
  • One (1) year of progressive experience in planning or coordinating youth, teen, and/or recreation programs for the public
  • This position is designated as a Mandated Reporter; completion of Mandated Reporter training is required within the first two weeks of employment

Licenses & Certification Requirements

  • Obtain a valid and appropriate CPR and First Aid certificate within 30 days of appointment, issued by a source acceptable to the City and must obtain renewals as required

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, twist, stoop and climb
  • Lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to travel to different sites and locations
  • Some activities are performed outdoors

Pay

Hourly salary: $23.73 - $24.68

Schedule

This is a non-benefited, at-will, part-time position with working hours to be assigned at the discretion of the Recreation & Community Services Department. Candidates must be able to work assigned shifts, which may include mornings, afternoons, evening shifts, and/or occasional weekends. Employee shall not work in excess of 960 total hours per fiscal year.
