Program Specialist (Academic Tutor/Behavioral Coach)

Salary: $26–$30 per hour, plus excellent benefits. Full-time, non-exempt position (30 hrs/week) through June 2, 2027. Reports to Site Coordinator.

About the role

Under the direction of the Site Coordinator, the Program Specialist (Academic Tutor/Behavioral Coach) provides academic tutoring, educational support, and behavioral coaching to youth during the school day and in after-school programs.

Responsibilities

• Provide one-on-one and group academic tutoring in core subject areas (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, etc.) and behavioral coaching to students.
• Collaborate with school-day teachers, counselors, and after-school staff to identify high-needs students who require educational support.
• Provide 1:1 light case management to students needing social-emotional learning and behavioral health support.
• Train and support high-school volunteer tutors as needed.
• Create incentive plans to encourage student engagement and retention.
• Develop and support skill-building and project-based learning activities for youth.
• Support outreach and marketing strategies to recruit and retain youth in after-school and summer programs.
• Establish and maintain a positive, safe learning environment, including classroom and behavior management, conflict mediation using restorative practices, and handling emergencies.
• Work collaboratively with school leadership, community partners, and faculty to align programs with school goals for student development, academic achievement, and social-emotional learning.
• Communicate professionally and consistently with parents/caregivers regarding youths’ progress and challenges.
• Maintain strong communication and positive relationships between school and families.
• Assist with data collection and produce programmatic reports for funders and supervisor.
• Administer and collect evaluation data for continuous program improvement.
• Participate in regular staff meetings and ongoing training opportunities.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of shared program spaces.
• Complete other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field preferred, plus 2 years of proven experience in youth development or academic support.
• Knowledge of youth development practices and one or more years of experience planning and facilitating enrichment activities for youth.
• Experience in classroom management, conflict mediation, and restorative practices is a plus.
• Experience working with diverse youth and families is a plus.
• Ability to develop, implement, and organize programs and special events.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Good organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
• Capacity to multi-task, work independently, and meet strict programmatic deadlines.
• Proficiency with Google Docs & Sheets, MS Office, and other technology tools.
• Ability to model professionalism, personal responsibility, a strong work ethic, and positive character to staff and participants.
• Bilingual in Spanish and Cantonese/Mandarin is highly preferred.
• Able to lift or move at least 25 lbs.
