UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies serves as a catalyst for positive change by advancing global access, equity, and social and economic mobility through educational enrichment across the lifespan. As a fully self-supporting division under UC San Diego Academic Affairs, Extended Studies operates year-round (12 months of active instruction) with a budget of $50 million annually. A team of 260 academic and staff employees and more than 1,200 instructors deliver exceptional educational experiences reflecting UC San Diego’s standing as a top-tier globally renowned public research university.
Extended Studies operates in 200,000 square feet of managed space, including a headquarters building with classrooms, training spaces, and key administrative offices adjacent to the UC San Diego campus, as well as off-campus classroom facilities in nearby University City. The division maintains a robust online learning platform with 24/7 webcasting and video-conferencing capabilities, alongside a strong web presence and e-commerce operations. There are over 90,000 enrollment transactions annually, supported by a network of representatives, agents, and students.
The division focuses on community engagement and enrichment through two television stations, UCTV and UCSD-TV, public lecture programs, and active participation in federal, state, local, and private research and technical assistance programs. Extended Studies also manages UC San Diego Park & Market, a 66,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility in downtown San Diego hosting civic, community, corporate, and campus events.
About the Role
The Program Manager manages the planning, scheduling, implementation, and evaluation of programs and courses within UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies. This role uses seasoned expertise to resolve a wide range of educational program issues and conduct needs assessments. The Program Manager develops new public educational programs and works on complex programs of diverse scope, exercising judgment in selecting methods and techniques for delivering courses, presentations, and development programs.
Additional duties include ongoing course schedule planning, instructor recruiting, student and instructor communications, promotional planning, periodic program and course evaluation, and responding to complex programmatic issues. The role involves collaborating with academic leadership and internal stakeholders on long-range strategic planning, developing outlines for new course curricula, and recommending updates to existing content. The Program Manager may also participate in developing strategic marketing plans, coordinating marketing events, and monitoring budgets.
Responsibilities
- Manage the planning, scheduling, implementation, and evaluation of public educational programs and courses.
- Develop new programs and address complex programmatic issues using seasoned professional judgment.
- Plan and implement course schedules, including defining tasks and required resources, and tracking deadlines and deliverables.
- Recruit, hire, and train instructors, and provide academic advising to students.
- Design and develop educational programs for adults, ensuring alignment with organizational needs.
- Participate in long-range strategic planning with academic leadership and internal stakeholders.
- Develop outlines for new course curricula and recommend updates to existing content.
- Coordinate marketing events and participate in developing strategic marketing plans.
- Develop and oversee simple to moderately complex budgets.
- Communicate effectively with students, instructors, and cross-functional teams to achieve shared goals.
- Conduct needs assessments and analyze program effectiveness to make data-driven recommendations.
Requirements
- Knowledge of managing a portfolio of business and management courses at the university or corporate level, specifically public educational programs covering topics such as sciences, technology, education, arts, and humanities.
- Demonstrated project management skills in an educational setting, including planning, scheduling, and tracking deliverables.
- Experience providing academic advising to students.
- Experience designing and developing educational programs for adults.
- Thorough knowledge and skill in delivering programs, including identifying, hiring, and training instructors.
- Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and foster positive working relationships.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including presentation skills.
- Analytical skills to conduct assessments, develop recommendations, and solve problems.
- Experience developing and overseeing budgets.
- Knowledge of marketing concepts, including developing marketing plans, targeting audiences, and coordinating events.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Thorough knowledge of functional area and understanding of its impact on other areas.
- Thorough knowledge of current public educational programs and trends.
- Proficiency in business software systems such as Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
Special Conditions
- Availability for occasional evenings and weekends, as well as attendance at local and out-of-town conferences or programs.
- Some overtime may be required during peak periods.
- Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on background check results.
Pay
Hiring pay scale: $65,000–$75,000 annually. Annual full pay range: $62,100–$107,100 (prorated if appointment percentage is less than 100%). Hourly equivalent: $29.74–$51.29. Compensation is determined based on experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, certifications, and organizational needs.
Schedule
Full-time (100% appointment), Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM.
