Primary Purpose

Integrates the specific educational focus of the Anesthesiology Program into the major goals of the Dr. Pallavi Patel School of Health Sciences by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate managers.

Essential Job Functions

  • Supervises faculty members and administrative support staff assigned to the program.
  • Carris out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the policies and applicable laws of Nova Southeastern University and the Health Professions Division.
  • Serves as Medical Director, faculty and staff.
  • Organizes, administers, reviews, plans, and develops the program.
  • Continually reviews the Program's curriculum to assess effectiveness of both the academic and clinical aspects of the program.
  • Works in conjunction with the Medical Director to ensure the delivery of quality academic programs through allocation of the program's faculty and financial resources.
  • Oversees the scheduling of classes, clinical rotations and the reporting of student grades.
  • Maintains responsibility of articulation between the Anesthesiology Program and other departments / programs within the Health Professions Division.
  • Responds to requests for data/information from supervisors, other college/university units and external agencies.
  • Conducts regular faculty/staff meetings and establishes Department committees as needed.
  • Ensures appropriate databases, records and documents are maintained as needed.
  • Reduces, resolves and prevents conflict among program personnel.
  • Represents the Department at University functions.
  • Represents the Department at Advisory Committee meetings.
  • Facilitates alumni relations.
  • Networks with colleagues and maintains effective and close working relationships with the Anesthesiology Programs.
  • Projects and manages the Anesthesiology program budget, monitors revenues and expenditures and adjusts the budget as needed.
  • Aids a coordinated effort in establishing needs for equipment and supplies.
  • Aids in the procurement of outside funding through grants and contracts as appropriate.
  • Oversees the accreditation and self-study processes.
  • Teaches in the classroom and in physical diagnosis / surgical labs.
  • Participates in and/or chairs committees for the School of Health Sciences, University-wide committees and/or for the Anesthesiology profession as assigned or elected.
  • Works with the Chair, the Dean, the Executive Assistant Dean of the School of Health Sciences and the Medical Director to set program goals and objectives, including research and service activities.
  • Promotes academic excellence and innovation.
  • Ensures program meets / exceeds accreditation standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Requirements

  • Appointment to the rank of professor requires a record of distinguished scholarship and outstanding teaching ability, evidenced by recognized professional productivity in the field(s) of specialization.
  • Appointment to the rank of associate professor normally requires a record of substantial success in teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Appointment to the rank of assistant professor requires completion of professional training, which in most disciplines will be a terminal degree (usually the earned doctorate), and the clear promise of a successful career in teaching, scholarship, and service.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific journals, financial reports and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, employees, regulatory agencies or members of the professional community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management and public groups in the English language.
  • Ability to apply basic financial; and accounting concepts to interpret financial statements, balance sheets and managerial accounting reports.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions.
  • Energetic, articulate, visionary, an effective decision maker and problem solver, an independent thinker and a leader of students, faculty and staff.
  • Maintains a personal professional development plan, which may include research and/or other creative activities to assure growth and currency within an academic or administrative field.
