Program Attorney Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide trauma-informed legal counsel and representation to clients affected by domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and/or stalking.
  • Represent clients in court proceedings and petitions, related to custody, divorce, protective orders, restraining orders, and other legal remedies stemming from the abuse to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Represent clients in affirmative immigration matters like U visas and VAWA petitions.
  • Conduct thorough assessments of the client’s legal needs.
  • Educate clients about their rights and legal options, empowering them to make informed decisions in their cases.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis.
  • Stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and legal developments impacting victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking.
  • Maintain attorney-client privilege in handling clients’ information and in communication with respect to all client matters.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement, social services agencies, and other community organizations, as needed, to coordinate comprehensive support for clients.
  • Provide referrals to additional support services such as counseling, housing assistance, and financial resources.
  • Engage in community outreach and education efforts to raise awareness about legal rights and resources available to survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and/or stalking.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to address the complex needs of clients, including with medical professionals, therapists, and advocates, if directed by the client.
  • Uphold ethical standards and professional responsibilities in all interactions with clients and others.
  • Consult directly with the Vice President of Social Services and UMOS General Counsel, as needed, on referrals or cases, and communicate any issues that arise.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, workshops and perform special projects and other related duties as assigned.

Required Program Attorney Job Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in the State Bar of Wisconsin and registered and authorized to appear before the US Executive Office of Immigration Review, or willing to obtain it.
  • Willingness to focus on family law.
  • Ability to travel and occasionally work irregular hours.
  • Reliable transportation: if driving their own vehicle must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and maintain adequate auto liability insurance.
  • At least two years of experience in family law, with a strong preference for experience working with survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • Experience advocating on behalf of diverse clients, including victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, limited English speakers, racial/ethnic minority groups, etc.
  • Experience using case database software.

Program Attorney Job Compensation

$67,969.00 to $88,272.00/Exempt Salary (depending on experience).

Work Environment, Physical, And Sensory Demands

  • Frequently exposed to moderate temperature generally encountered in a controlled temperature environment.
  • Noise level in this work is usually quiet to moderate.
  • Tools & Equipment Used: iPad, iPhone, laptop/desktop computer. Projectors, multi-functional scan/fax/copy machine. Use first aid equipment, fire extinguisher.
